Unlike most superfights, Saturday’s fight between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios at the Venetian-Macau Resort Hotel in Macao, China, for a title no one ever heard of. But this fight is about more than cheesey trinkets. This fight is about fighting. It’s about the great Manny Pacquiao and the near-great Brandon Rios, both of whom are on a collision course with destiny unknown. The fight will be broadcast live on HBO pay-per-view, so naturally HBO is pulling out all the stops. Their 24/7’s established the aesthetic and tone of these mini-documentaries long ago, and they’ve hardly been bettered by their cable war competitor. The themes are familiar, as they repeat themselves from doc to doc and fight to fight. We see the combatants at work and play. We listen to their dreams, goals and aspirations. We follow their every move as the big night of the fight approaches. There are occasional dissonances when real life creeps in, like when Floyd Mayweather and his father trade insults, or when Alex Ariza kicks Freddie Roach in the chest. But these moments of surprise are as few and far between. The surprises begins when the combatants are warned to protect themselves at all times, touch gloves, and the bell sounds to start the fight…
