A Boxing Fan’s Dream Weekend

A Boxing Fan’s Dream Weekend
If you have not seen my favorite young fighter work, by all means make it a point to do so

Things start off on Friday when Sergio Mora meets Jose Flores in Florida. James Toney takes on tough Denis Lebedev for something called the interim WBA cruiserweight belt. And my favorite young fighter, Ismayl Sillakh, takes on Ali Ismailov in the undercard. If you have not seen Sillakh work, by all means make it a point to do so.

On Saturday, Lucian Bute meets Glen Johnson in beautiful Quebec City and Alfredo Angulo goes to war with James Kirkland in Cancun and that would be more than enough, but wait, there’s still more! Steve Molitor fights Sebastian Gauthier and Allan Green comes back against Sebastian Demer. Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (25-0) vs. tough Craig McEwan (19-1) supports the Kirkland-Angulo war and undefeated 6’7” Deontay Wilder (18-0) will risk his undefeated record against the dreaded TBA.

Chris Arreola will fight (and win) his sixth straight in Mexico against hapless Raphael Butler, while classy George Groves (13-0) takes on Paul Smith (31-2) for the British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles in London. For those with a taste for something on the wild side, Michael Katsidis (28-4) dukes with tough Ricky Burns (32-2). The Kat is known as a Pom Killer, so this one promises to be super exciting.

Some big guys will also war as Guillermo Jones tangles with Michael Marrone in Florida, Derek “Del Boy” Chisora fights the plodding Larry Olubamiwo in the UK, and aging Oliver McCall (56-11) fights Pole Mariusz Wach (25-0) in Connecticut.

What particularly intrigues me is the potential for seeing Toney get his light taken out, Glen Johnson get knocked out by a Bute laser-like uppercut, and also witnessing the unstoppable Oliver McCall get stopped by the somewhat unknown Wach.

Wow!! Let’s get it on.

So far 5 for 5 with the big upset predicted of Katsisdis.

Mora over Flores (Flores was topnotch years ago but was out of action between 2002 ands 2010)

    Angulo over Kirkland (shoot out)
Lebedev over Toney (Toney is too old for this guy)

Sillakh over Ismailov (slick and stylish)
Bute over Johnson (could be a stoppage)
Molitor over Gauthier (Molitor on comeback trail)

Green over Demer (so is Green)
Quillen over McEwan (Kid Chocolate steps up)

Wilder over TBA (This is getting sickening)

Arreola over Butler (easiest pick of the year)Groves over Smith (Brit dust up)

Burns over Katsidis (I see the Kat as being shot and Burns as exposing that)
Jones over Marrone (Marrone will get chilled)

    Rojas over Ledsma

  2. the thresher 04:45am, 11/05/2011

    Sergio Mora won. I’m 3 for 3.

  3. the thresher 09:43am, 11/04/2011

Looking for a stoppage at any point now

  4. the thresher 09:35am, 11/04/2011

Toney getting RIPPED with left hands, and that one hurt him. Toney back to the ropes, and he’s squared himself up again. He still takes a shot. The man is tougher than leather.

  5. the thresher 09:33am, 11/04/2011

Anyone want me to stop? I don’t want to be a spoiler.

  6. the thresher 09:26am, 11/04/2011

    I have Lebedev 60-54 after 6 rounds

  7. the thresher 09:15am, 11/04/2011

Meanwhile, Toney is getting the crap kicked out of him. I am following it on live stream.

  8. the thresher 08:43am, 11/04/2011

    ok, Ismayl Sillakh KO-4

I am now one for one

  9. The Thresher 03:29am, 11/02/2011

    From Olubamiwo’s Facebook:

“Hi everyone. Have to tell you that I am really ill and so won’t be able to fight on saturday. I am really disappointed as I was looking forward to coming back but wanna thank everyone for their support and will be back as soon as I am better. Anyone who brought tickets from me can get a refund.”

Thanks, Ted. I agree with everything except the Katsidis fight.

    How about some predictions. Bull?

  13. TEX HASSLER 05:10pm, 11/01/2011

Things are looking up with some good match-ups. It looks like the fans have something to look forward to.

  14. The Thresher 04:04pm, 11/01/2011

Also, Tomas Rojas should have no trouble with Feliciano Dario Azuaga Ledesma whose record is 82-21-2 but is very deceptive in a negative way.

  15. The Thresher 04:01pm, 11/01/2011

Also this weekend, “Rayito” Hirales will face the most difficult bout of his career; he will face the current National Champion Enrique “Duende” Bernache, in a ten-round bout. But Hirales is special and should win.

Thought I was a pretty knowledgable fan till Ted the encyclopedia exposed me here.  I’ve got Bute over Johnson by UD, maybe ko.

  17. The Thresher 01:56pm, 11/01/2011

I’m going to change Olubamiwo over Chisora (I’m betting that Del-Boy shows up out of shape). Olubamiwo is too slow.Chisra will chill him.

    Angulo-Kirkland could be FOTY

  20. The Thresher 09:49am, 11/01/2011

All the main events are supported by strong undercards so you can’t really go wrong. Plus, if you know how to stream, you can see the UK fights.

Beautifully teed up, Ted. If Putin or some other charming democrat gets snotty in the meantime, I guess we’ll have to catch up on Monday. No, make that Tuesday. Monday is my peaceful time for taking in all the NFL results!

  23. Don From Prov 08:12am, 11/01/2011

Sounds like a hell of a weekend.  Thanks for the heads-up.  I’d not know about the young fighter OR the Friday night card: I take it that the fights are on ShowBox on Friday, correct?

  24. bk don 07:22am, 11/01/2011
