Mayweather-Guerrero: But First?

Mayweather-Guerrero: But First?
Prior to May 4, fight fans will be treated to another dream weekend of boxing on April 27.

As Robert Guerrero prepares for his May 4 bout against undefeated Floyd Mayweather, fight fans will be treated to another dream weekend of boxing…

“Mayweather has aged; he’s not the same fighter.”—Robert Guerrero

As Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero prepares for his May 4 bout against undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., fight fans will be treated to another dream weekend of boxing on April 27 with the following to choose from:

Sergio Martinez will entertain his home country fans as he defends against Martin Murray in Argentina. Exciting Luis Carlos Abregu takes on improving Antonin Decarie on the undercard, And for those who like big guys, Magomed Abdusalamov will try to keep his run of KOs alive as he meets Sebastian Ceballos.

Speaking of big guys, Chris Arreola battles Bermaine Stiverne (HBO) in Ontario, California in a heavyweight eliminator which, in my opinion, will eliminate Stiverne. Also on this card will be Ricardo Williams Jr. and Oscar Molina fighting dreaded TBAs.

Showtime will present a great night of boxing from Brooklyn featuring Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah, exciting and strong Peter Quillin battling overmatched Fernando Guerrero, while courageous Danny Jacobs and veteran Luis Collazo take on dangerous TBAs.

In a same-day tape, Showtime will present Amir Khan vs. Julio Diaz from Sheffield, England, but the Deontay Wilder vs. Audley Harrison fight is also intriguing for as long as it lasts (which won’t be very long), as it may tell us what we want to know about “The Bronze Bomber. Veteran and maybe shopworn Nate Campbell (yes, that Nate Campbell) is also scheduled to duke with Terry Flannigan (19-0). This could be Nate’s last one.

For those who enjoy slick counterpunchers and combo punchers, Sugar Ray Beltran will be strutting these skills against Monte Meza Clay in Austin, Texas.

From Hamburg, Germany, Juergen Braehmer takes on Tony Averlant for Braehmer’s European light heavyweight title. Also on the card is a 12-rounder between light heavyweights Dustin Dirks vs. Oleksandr Cherviak, and a 10-crusierweight fight between Firat Arslan vs. Varol Vekiloglu.

Then, to top things off, James Toney risks life and limb as he rumbles with Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne, while aging Solomon Haumono takes on Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson over 12 rounds.

It’s almost enough to make you forget that on the following weekend, “The Ghost” will be looking to put pressure on “Money” Mayweather using punch volume to back him up, and determination, grit, and will to outwork him..As for Floyd, he needs to move around the ring because this time he will not match his opponent’s work rate or be able to knock him out. In any event, we will soon find out if Robert Guerrero is good enough to be in the same ring with Mayweather and the thinking here is that he most definitely is.

But much, much more on this later; first, we need to get through “Canelo” vs. Trout on April 20. Oh yes, Nathan Cleverly fights tough Robin Krasnigi this Saturday in London with an interesting undercard featuring Dereck Chisora, Scott Harrison, Paul Butler, and even Enzo Maccarinelli.

Last but not least, NBC will be presenting Tyson Fury-Steve Cunningham from New York on Saturday afternoon.

These are great times to be a boxing fan. Enjoy.

Don’t forget, this is one of the truly great boxing weekends in recent years:

“HBO Sports® spans two continents, visiting South America for the first time, for a tripleheader headlined by the return of middleweight superstar Sergio Martinez when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: SERGIO MARTINEZ VS. MARTIN MURRAY, LUIS CARLOS ABREGU VS. ANTONIN DECARIE AND CHRIS ARREOLA VS. BERMANE STIVERNE is seen SATURDAY, APRIL 27 at 8:30 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from Buenos Aries, Argentina and Ontario, Cal. exclusively on HBO. Separate HBO Sports teams in both locations will call all the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino. Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman, Roy Jones Jr. and Harold Lederman will be ringside in Buenos Aries, while Bob Papa, Andre Ward and Steve Weisfeld will call the action from Ontario, CA. “

are gonna see ‘the mexican eclipse’ again..or has Arreola been training…
Let’s see the weigh in…if the screen is wide enough

  3. Ted 04:30pm, 04/21/2013

    They are for sure.

  4. NYIrish 12:52pm, 04/21/2013

You got it Ted. And a salute to BPD, The Staties, BFD n EMS. Real pros.

  5. Ted 07:05am, 04/21/2013

NYIrish, I think Floyd wins but I’d put money down (no pun intended) that he doesn’t wax him. Of course, if Floyd gets him in an exchange and is able to counter, anything can happen. The blueprint was set by a shot Cotto. Now it’s up to the Ghost to refine it with incoming pressure and punch volume. He needs to make Floyd work and test those legs.

  6. NYIrish 06:58am, 04/21/2013

Re Floyd v Guerrero; Despite Floyd’s advancing age and all the BS that surrounds him he is a puncher with quick hands. The punch is the last to go in an aging fighter. I think he will find Guerrero and stop him.

  7. Ted 03:53pm, 04/20/2013

BTW and for what they are worth, here are my predictions:

    Martinez stops Murray
    Abregu stops Decarie
    Arreola KO’s Stiverne
    Garcia stops Judah
    Quillin KOs Guerrero
    Flannigan stops Campbell
    Khan beats Diaz
    Wilder KOs Harrison
    Beltran beats Clay
    Johnson beats Haumono
    Browne beats Toney
Fury obliterates Cunningham —— Got it!
    Trout upsets Alvarez
    Mago stops Sebastian Ceballos
    Braehmer beats Averlant
Danny Jacobs and Luis Collazo beat the dreaded and dangerous TBAs And so do Ricardo Williams Jr. and Oscar Molina.

LMFAO. Kevin could have been a contender.

    Here you go:

    http://www.boxingscene.com/canelo-under-jalisco-fire-arrest-warrant-pursued—64532

And this was posted on Facebook which should be treated as nothing more than a rumor:

“The Alvarez Bros A Family Affair… Here’s what I have gathered thus far:
Apparently the Alvarez bros are in some type of trouble. All of them.
Two are receiving arresting orders (Canelo being one of them), One is on the run for murder and the other one has made recent comments praising his brother (Canelo) when just a few days ago he was saying Canelo would not lend him money to start an “Avocado” business and because of that Canelo kicked him and his mom out of their home…”

If most of this is true (and I have no clue at to whether it is), I go with Trout. No way a 22 year old kid can handel this stuff—at least I don’t think so.

  11. Ted 03:28pm, 04/18/2013

I’ll save the reason why I think Trout will beat Alvarez because it’s based on some startling rumors that have been posted on Facebook. If they are confirmed, I’m going with Trout all the way and will explain why..

And yes, I do think The Ghost has a chance. This kid always seems to rise to the occasion and he has grit, determination, and will. If he can press the action and use punch volume, he could give Floyd pure hell. This is the toughest opponent Floyd has fought in a long time prime-wise..

  12. Don from Prov 01:58pm, 04/18/2013

Wilder fights like a giraffe on crack—
But he can do that too, crack, I mean.  That right hand, you know?

  13. Don from Prov 01:56pm, 04/18/2013

“Well if you feasted in the morning on Burritos, taco, beans, and rice, what do you think?”

    That I shouldn’t be a fighter.
Trout over Alvarez?  I gonna remember that one.

What about Ghost of a chance—you think he has one?

  14. Ted 01:22pm, 04/18/2013

    Quillin KOs Guerrero

  17. Ted 12:32pm, 04/18/2013

Kid, the one that interests me the most is Wilder-Harriison. Don’t go to the john.

  18. Ted 12:31pm, 04/18/2013

    Kurt, spot on.

  19. Ted 12:30pm, 04/18/2013

Well if you feasted in the morning on Burritos, taco, beans, and rice, what do you think?

  20. Don from Prov 11:25am, 04/18/2013

    Is Areola fat again?

  21. Kurt 11:07am, 04/18/2013

I think the Mayweather - Guerrero fight will largely be determined by the referee. We all know in Las Vegas the referees typically give Pretty Boy lots of latitude. They do not allow his opponents to infight,  they let Floyd repeatedly get away with the forearm to the throat maneuver and of course, every genius boxing writers favorite the “Shoulder Roll” which is simply the first part of an elbow strike. If the referee allows Guerrero to fight inside, and contains Floyds illegal tactics Guerrero has an excellent chance of winning this fight.

  22. kid vegas 09:58am, 04/18/2013

Thanks for the schedule. How can I pick from this list? Too many good fights.

  23. Tex Hassler 09:51am, 04/18/2013

Mayweather may not be getting a gift by fighting Guerrero. Guerrero can fight and he is hungry plus Floyd is moving past his prime. I would not be surprized if Guerrero “shocks the world” by upsetting Floyd. Thanks for a good article.
