Boxers box, as they have always boxed, going back to the time of the Ancient Greeks.

Boxing is a compelling sport and a fascinating subject. No other sport, perhaps no other profession, demands of its practitioners what boxing does. The amount of pain one must endure to become an even moderately good boxer is inconceivable to most of us, except in the abstract. Yet boxers box, as they have always boxed, going back to the time of the Ancient Greeks if not beyond. The instinct of self-preservation, where we go out of our way to protect our bodily selves, is bred out of the boxer in much the same way as cowardice is bred out of a soldier. But even those of us totally immersed in the game have a love-hate relationship with the fights. It’s a pleasure, but a guilty pleasure, because we know how 99% of all fighters end up. “After the Last Round” takes a technical but unflinching look as this phenomenon, where men of sound body and sound mind put it all on the line, with sometimes disastrous results…
