Another Dream Boxing Weekend

Another Dream Boxing Weekend
Things really heat up Saturday when Cotto confronts Margarito (Chris Farina/Top Rank)

Back in late October, I wrote about a dream weekend (beginning Nov. 4) featuring guys like Glen Johnson, Lucian Bute, James Kirkland, Chris Arreola, and Alfredo Angulo. Well, Kirkland and Angulo did not let us down, but I believe we have an even better one this weekend.

Things get off to a start on Wednesday when Chris John (35-0-2) fights one Stanyslav Merdov (32-7) for John’s WBA super featherweight crown. This card will be in Mt. Claremont, Australia, and will also include Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (45-2-1) fighting Danny Green (31-4) in a do-or-die outing of sorts (at least for Danny it is), and Will “Wild Will” Tomlinson (17-0) going up against Mexican Alan Herrera (26-3) for the vacant IBO super featherweight title. These fights are on Wednesday and we’ll know the results before the weekend starts.

On Friday, Dec. 2 in Mannheim, Germany, Felix Sturm (36-2-1) and Martin Murray (23-0) square off with the WBA middleweight title at stake, while across the ocean comebacking Anthony Dirrell takes on Renan St. Juste and Chris Avalos dukes with Jhonatan Romero at Santa Ynez, CA (Showtime will cover).

However, things really heat up in New York City on Saturday when Miguel Cotto (36-2) confronts Antonio Margarito (38-7) in a much-anticipated grudge rematch and at the Garden no less. The fight is for the WBA junior middleweight title, but the title is only a part of the story as there are enough crosscurrents and subplots to please just about everyone.

The undercard is also stellar and features:

Brandon Rios (28-0-1) vs. John Murray (31-1)—the exciting Rios is on a roll and holds the WBA lightweight title.

Mike Jones (25-0) vs. Sebastian Lujan (38-5-2)—and so is Jones but he is no Rios.

Pawel Wolak (29-1-1) vs. hard luck Delvin Rodriguez (25-5-3)—who can forget their first encounter?

If you happen to be in Helsinki, Finland, you’ll have the opportunity to see the big guys in action as Teddy Atlas-trained Alexander Povetkin (22-0) takes on Cedric Boswell (35-1) and my favorite heavyweight, undefeated Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius (16-0) matches up with durable Derek “Del-Boy” Chisora (15-1) in an interesting Euro-war.

Over in Mexico City, steamrolling Jhonny Gonzalez (50-7) will be looking for his 11th KO in a row as he defends his WBC featherweight title against Panamanian Roinet Caballero (31-10-1), while in Anaheim, CA, Abner Mares (22-0-1) fights Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko (28-3) in another interesting rematch on Showtime.

In the co-feature, Anselmo Moreno (31-1-1) fights the always exciting Vic Darchinyan (37-3-1) in another do-or-die affair because Vic is not getting any younger. Carlos Molina vs. Manuel Leyva, under-the radar Eric “Little Hands of Steel” Morel (45-2) vs. Jose Silveira, and always tough Sakio Bika vs. limited Alfredo Contreras fill out the card.

Let’s get it on!

I think you may be wrong this time, MRBILL

I sense this time Cotto boxes smarter, refuses to engage too much, and out-points Tony M. over 12 rds with faded boxing skills…... I contend that Tony M. is shot / damaged goods…....

Wow…can’t be in Helsinki this weekend but I’d like to see Helenius fight again.

I am rooting for Cotto against “Margocheato” but I don’t see him being able to defeat the Mexican..with or without cement in his gloves.

Seriously stacked weekend.  Thanks for the info Ted.  In the big fight I’m picking Cotto to UD Marg., though I do not have complete confidence.
