Chad said, “You take one step forward. You get knocked down. You take one step back.”

He wasn’t popular when he was champ. He was less popular when he wasn’t champ. But after two beatings in his last two fights, the first at the hands of Andre Ward in Sept. 2012 and the second an explosive first-round blowout by Adonis Stevenson in June 2013, many thought they had seen the last of Chad Dawson.

No one ever questioned “Bad” Chad Dawson’s skills. His sense of urgency was another matter.

The 31-year-old Dawson (32-3) returned to the ring Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, in a prelim bout before the televised Showtime tripleheader. His opponent was 39-year-old George “Honey Boy” Blades (23-6) from Indianapolis, Indiana.

“It’s the process of boxing,” said Dawson prior to the bout. “I had to accept that. You take one step forward. You get knocked down. You take one step back.”

Dawson cut Blades down to size at 2:35 of the first round.

“I’m going to be a three-time world champion,” Dawson said. “I can see it.”

Dawson earned $12,000 for his comeback fight.
