On Saturday, September 23, Badou Jack sent a letter to the WBA stating he would be vacating the light heavyweight world title. He thanked the organization for the opportunity to fight for the belt versus Nathan Cleverly on August 28, when Jack stopped Cleverly in the 5th round to win the championship.

The WBA had ordered purse bids to begin Monday, September 25 between Jack and contender Dmitry Bivol. With the title now being vacated, the purse bid order has been suspended.
