Beware the Borg

Beware the Borg
Will he join fellow Australian greats Young Griffo, Les Darcy, Dave Sands, and Lionel Rose?

Though only a two-year pro, Aussie lightweight Valentine Borg became a titleholder in his third fight, winning the vacant New South Wales championship…

“Resistance is futile.”—The Borg

Does the kid even shave yet? Perhaps not, but thus far his whiskers have served him well.

Though only a two-year pro (6-0, 4 KOs), Aussie lightweight Valentine “Bring It” Borg became a titleholder in his third fight, winning the vacant New South Wales championship by stopping Allan Jay Tuniacao via fifth-round TKO in February 2013. He won the Australian title by stopping Robert Toomey via fourth-round TKO in August and the vacant IBO Asia Pacific championship by stopping Dennis Tubieron via sixth-round TKO in December.

Borg is set to defend his IBO against Joebert Delos Reyes (10-4-1, 7 KOs) over a scheduled 10 rounds at the Croatian Club in Punchbowl, New South Wales, Australia, on March 28. Reyes hasn’t fought since March 16, 2013, when he beat John Ford by unanimous decision. The rusty Filipino’s four losses have come by way of stoppage, and I expect him to suffer his fifth courtesy of the hard-punching Borg.

Will the Aussie soon make his presence known on the international scene in a quest for weightier baubles? Are Ricky Burns’ WBO, Richar Abril’s WBA, Miguel Vazquez’s IBF, and (hope springs eternal) Adrien Broner’s WBC at risk? Will Borg one day join fellow Australian greats Young Griffo, Les Darcy, Dave Sands, and Lionel Rose in the hallowed halls of the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame?

I haven’t idea one. But if he does…you heard of him here first.

Glad you liked that, Nicolas, and let’s hope that “Bring It” does exactly that.

Clarence, I love your last sentence. According to Boxrec, there are at this time only 19 fighters fighting in the lightweight division, with ten being from New South Wales.  they have fighters of the past in that division at approximately 5,330, which if we figure of the times of Sullivan-Corbett at 40 per year.

Thanks you, Irish.  Yeah, he had a reasonably good amateur background, winning 41 of 46.  I’m not sure who his opponent is in the video (Tuniacao?), but his defense does indeed leave a great deal to be desired.

Right you are, Mike—“Borg” tends to trigger Bjorn rather than Val.

    Or tennis.

Clarence George-You have the instincts of a gold prospector….which reminds me….got to believe that he had an extensive amateur career…..still….only six fights in two years….I guess it’s a different kind of fast track when you’re going after titles right out of the gate. Per the video above….my advice to future opponents is don’t stand in front of him and try to play peek-a-boo.
