The WBA elevated Dmitry Bivol to world light heavyweight champion after the title was vacated by Badou Jack…

Dmitry Bivol, formerly the WBA interim light heavyweight world champion, has been elevated by the World Boxing Association (WBA) to world light heavyweight champion after the title was vacated by Badou Jack.

Per the WBA’s Rule C.28, when a title is vacant, the WBA Committee may choose to elevate the interim champion at their discretion, or order a fight between the top two ranked boxers in the division for the title. In Bivol’s case, the Committee chose to elevate him as they decided he meets all of the requirements to be named world champion.

With this change, the WBA has eliminated the interim championship in the light heavyweight division, and the weight class has only one world champion.

The WBA has mandated that Bivol have his first mandatory bout by July 25, 2018. Until 60 days prior to that date, he may make voluntary defenses as he likes.

Bivol is scheduled to face Trent Broadhurst on November 4 in Monte Carlo.
