“To have somebody fight the top fighter of our era with someone who hasn’t had one professional boxing match—they’re out of their mind…”

Dana White, the brains behind UFC, has accused Bob Arum of being “senile” for dissing the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. Name-calling may be infantile, but White knows better than to hit an 85-year-old man.

“That’s really class,” Arum told the Los Angeles Times. “Dana can say whatever he wants, but he hurts his argument by resorting to these comments … But what do you expect?”

Not much; not now and not from this event.

“It’s nothing personal or argumentative,” said Arum, “but to have somebody fight the top fighter of our era with someone who hasn’t had one professional boxing match—they’re out of their mind. If [McGregor] hasn’t trained for years, he’s not going to perform … He’s a combat fighter, not a boxer. It’s a different sport. The MMA guys have to have different movements and stances to guard against a kick or a takedown, It’s not the same stance as a boxer. Boxers stand a different way, and Mayweather is the greatest practitioner of that.”

Mayweather may do more dancing than standing. He’s one of the greatest practitioners of that, as well.

“If people are going to watch this, you can’t put a gun to their head,” Arum said. “What I wonder about is the commission. How can they let McGregor fight this fight without having a four- or six-round fight against some tomato can first?”

It would have spoiled everything.

“If they want to put together a spectacle like this, that’s fine. Mayweather-McGregor will make a lot of money. The idea that it’s good or bad for boxing is sort or irrelevant because … it really has nothing to do with boxing.”
