Brain vs. Brute: O’Connor Fights Smart
“He used his brute and I used my brain. I boxed intelligently and I stayed true to me.”

Danny O’Connor scored a fifth round TKO victory over Chris Gilbert on the undercard of PBC on NBC…

This afternoon at the Agganis Arena in Boston, Massachusetts, Danny O’Connor (26-2 10 KOs), the 30-year-old welterweight from Framingham, Massachusetts, scored a fifth round TKO victory over 30-year-old Chris Gilbert (13-2 10 KOs), from Windsor, Vermont, on the undercard of PBC on NBC. While it was clear that he completely outclassed his opponent, O’Connor’s slick style and intelligent approach should easily set the pace for bigger and better fights in the near future.

Gilbert went down in the second, third and fifth rounds, following a relentless and impressive attack by O’Connor. He showed textbook skills by working both upstairs and down with precision and grace.

O’Connor was slated to face Paulie Malignaggi on May 29, but Malignaggi suffered a cut in training camp that led to the fight’s postponement.

O’Connor said yesterday that his best asset in the ring was his brain, and he proved that this afternoon. “He used his brute,” said O’Connor, “and I used my brain. I boxed intelligently and I stayed true to me. I was smart and I didn’t try to take any extra punishment that I didn’t need to just to prove a point.”

DavidT- I don’t think he filled up on the way in! Bless his heart, he took the fight on short notice and is just not in Danny’s league, IMHO.

Did Gilbert run out of gas?

One of my buddies reffed this one and the main event as well. Good to see him get the work Danny is beginning to set down nicely on his punches.
