Saturday night at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, former Olympian “Sir” Marcus Browne (20-0, 15 KOs), the top-10 ranked light heavyweight southpaw from Staten Island, flattened Long Island’s Seanie Monaghan (28-1, 17 KOs), the veteran contender from Long Beach, at 0:40 of round two.

Browne is only 26. Tall, lean, muscular and athletic, he has been well schooled at the Atlas Cops & Kids Boxing Club and is on the cusp of his fighting prime. An indication of Browne’s growth as a fighter is how effortlessly he handed undefeated Monaghan his first loss, no less than the authoritative manner in which he did it.

A hard left hand dropped Monaghan less than a minute into the opening stanza. He made it to his feet, unsteadily, and through the first round. Browne wasted no time in the second. He cornered Monaghan and staggered him with a right hook. Several unanswered punches prompted referee Steve Willis to step in and wave it off.

“I was loose, relaxed. I started to let things flow,” said Browne. “It was a straight left that I set up with the jab. Then I caught him with a right hook, looking to finish the job.”

Even the most jaundiced among us think Browne has earned his shot at a world title.

“I want Adonis Stevenson next,” he said.

The WBC light heavyweight champion seems disinclined to jeopardize his title. Others have wanted a crack at Stevenson with predictable if not always memorable results.

“I want that strap,” added Browne. “I want to bring it home to New York City.”

The only question here is why was this mismatch made? Kind of telling that Browne thanked Seanie’s people for taking the match….. unspoken but obviously because they gave him a chance to showcase in front of a big audience.
