Charging for the Weigh-In?

Charging for the Weigh-In?
When’s the last time a fight of this magnitude had anyone scrambling for a 501(c)(3) form?

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao has a few holes that need to be patched and dollars will be thrown around for every little bit of it…

It was just a matter of time.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are but steps away from each other now. The biggest (by way of being the most expensive) fight in the history of boxing is just around the corner. Sometime around 8pm local time on May 2 in Las Vegas, the bell will finally ring to signal the beginning of a contest that was by many accounts more than a half decade in the making, if not the wishing. There are some estimates that in the neighborhood of 100,000 people will descend upon Sin City for the weekend of the big fight. Alas, reports surfaced yesterday that the powers that be have decided to charge fight fans an admission fee to attend the weigh-in on Friday afternoon (May 1).

Of course, kudos of the utmost sort should be levied upon those same individuals, as further information has indicated that all profits made from ticketing will go to charitable causes. When’s the last time a fight of this magnitude had anyone scrambling for a 501(c)(3) form? It’s a bit unprecedented. However, it makes perfect sense and for all the right reasons. Look at it this way. Public events such as weigh-ins allow many fans to catch a rare glimpse of a fighter without being able to attend the actual fight the next evening. That much seems to be about the fans.

Still, once factors such as rabid fan devotion are considered, then it makes even more sense to charge admission. In the fall of 2013, more than a few boxing fans of a certain Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in effect camped out near the doors of the MGM Grand Garden Arena multiple hours (as in double digits) in advance to grab a favorable seat inside. The hazardous nature of a sporting venue that is not a free standing building such as the MGM arena or the similar site at nearby Mandalay Bay is that for the most part, there is one way in and one way out. That’s fine when patrons choose to show up for the event at their leisure; however it’s a completely different story when the night is done. It’s a frightening struggle to get out in a timely manner and there’s lots of pushing and shoving to the point of needing a shoehorn to move forward.

The only other option is waiting upwards of ninety minutes to let the crowds disperse. It’s a bummer to many, but it’s unfortunately a necessary evil to control the amount of fans wanting to see the last staredown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao live and in person. Perhaps promoters could take matters even a step further and conduct the weigh in “in the round”. So, be on the lookout for reports that the incidental live gate for this will easily surpass $100,000 if tickets are indeed to be sold for ten dollars each. Who gets the service fees? That’s for another day. This event has a few holes that need to be patched and dollars will be thrown around for every little bit of it.

It’s somewhat like the old school pizzerias back east. Walk in to one of these places and ask for a single slice of pizza and you’ll get the dirty eye for those behind the counter. You’ll have to buy the whole pie to satisfy your palate. Mayweather versus Pacquiao is now in our collective faces and we’ll have to pay for at least some of the pie.

THIS is WHY boxing has become a third tier sport. IF this bout turns out to be a dud, boxing will fall even further.
