Chuck Wepner Biopic

A Chuck Wepner biopic is in the works.

The Bleeder will star Liev Schreiber as Wepner, Naomi Watts as his wife Linda, and Christina Hendricks as one of his girlfriends.

According to Variety, the film will focus on the life and career of Wepner, aka the Bayonne Bleeder Wepner (35-14-2, 17 KOs), the contender’s contender who fought George Foreman in 1969, Sonny Liston in 1970, Ernie Terrell in 1973, and went the distance with Muhammad Ali in 1975.

The Bayonne Bleeder’s performance versus Ali inspired an unknown young screenwriter/actor named Sylvester Stallone to write Rocky, loosely based on Wepner’s gutsy performance against The Greatest.

The Bleeder is the first feature film to be directed by documentary filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig, who won Best Documentary (Devil And Daniel Johnston) at Sundance in 2005,  and who co-wrote the script with Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II).

The project is being shopped at the Cannes Film Festival this week.

I had a rare opportunity to meet Chuck Wepner a few years ago at a Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge/Larry Chance and the Earls concert at the Dutchess Manor in Poughkeepsie, NY. He is a gentleman, no question, and he stays in pretty good physical shape even though he’s been a long time retired from the ring. I wish him the best of luck with his new biopic “The Bleeder”.
