Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan (36-3-1, 27 KOs) continued his winning ways by stopping former IBF bantamweight champion Yonnhy “El Colombiano” Perez (20-2-1, 14 KOs) with a TKO stoppage at 1:44 in round five of a scheduled 12-round bout.
In another sterling performance in what has been nothing less than a sterling career, Darchinyan totally dominated his younger opponent to walk away with the IBO 118-pound title at the Nokia Theatre in L.A. Saturday night.
Darchinyan dropped Perez to the canvas in the second and was ahead 50-44 on the all three scorecards when the fight was halted by ringside physician Dr. Paul Wallace due to an accidental headbutt.
“Perez suffered from an arterial bleed,” Wallace explained. “One of his blood vessels had been cut and it was pumping directly into his eye.”
“He took big punches,” added Darchinyan. “I wanted to knock him out, but he is still a great fighter. It was a headbutt. But if it wasn’t a headbutt, I’d knock him out. No more boxing in my style.”
When the fight between IBF champion Joseph Agbeko and undefeated Abner Mares was shelved after Agbeko withdrew due to an iinjury, Darchyinan-Perez was elevated to main event. With Darchinyan’s performance last night, possible rematches with Agbeko and Mares, both of whom he lost to, look like a real possibility.
“Today,” Darchinyan said, “I’d fight anyone in the division. I’d like to fight Abner Mares if he’d fight me. If not, I’ll fight Nonito Donaire. If they won’t fight me, I’ll move up to another division.”
It looks like we’ve not seen the last of Vic Darchinyan.
