DiBella Takes a Bullet for Haymon
Golden Boy's lawsuit alleges that Al Haymon is functioning as a de facto promoter.

Lou DiBella’s dealings with Al Haymon have put him in the line of fire of rival promoters, who have called him a puppet…

Some of roughest action in the sport is occurring outside the ring.

While Oscar De La Hoya, Bob Arum, and Kathy Duva are hurling lawsuits and accusations at arch-rival Al Haymon, Lou DiBella is unabashedly working his corner.

“Anybody could have taken the initiative and said, ‘I’m going to raise money and try to bring the sport back to more eyeballs…bring it to free television and basic cable outlets,’” said DiBella, who has worked extensively with Haymon to promote PBC shows. “It’s happening now because somebody is making the investment. What’s the problem with that?”

De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions are suing Haymon for $300 million, alleging that they have repeatedly violated antitrust laws and the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, a federal law that prohibits managers from also serving as a promoter. Managers have a fiduciary duty to the boxer, but the promoter does not.

Golden Boy’s lawsuit alleges that Haymon is functioning as a de facto promoter, while also managing or advising more than 180 fighters, many of whom were once associated with Golden Boy.

The $100 million suit filed by Top Rank accuses Haymon of similar promoter/manager conflicts of interest, and “predatory practices.”

De La Hoya claims Haymon booked every significant boxing venue in Southern California for major boxing dates—effectively forcing his competitors to plan their shows elsewhere—then pulled out of those venues.

DiBella’s dealings with Haymon have put him in the line of fire of rival promoters, who have called him a “sham promoter” and a Haymon puppet.

“I know who I am, and I know I’m not a sham,” DiBella told the New York Post. “I’ve promoted my ass off since I left HBO in 2000. I guess because I’m doing business with PBC and Al Haymon, I’m a sham? Was everybody else who was doing business with him previously also a sham?”

And the Oscar for low class goes to…

Forgive me, but must I continue to marvel at the train wreck of a human being named Adrien Broner? TMZ Sports reports that Broner is being sued by a woman (identified in court records as “Jane Doe”) who was the target of a video in which “The Problem” starred, during which he identified her by name, and claimed she gave him crabs.

The plaintiff—who, by the way, says she wasn’t the culprit—states that she has been ridiculed, harassed and embarrassed since Broner posted the video at worldstarhiphop.com.

In my day (when The Flintstones were part of our world), it was considered low-class to kiss and tell. Broner has plunged the sin of “kiss and tell” into a far-deeper sewer…and he’d better hope the judge hearing his lawsuit isn’t from my generation.

Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga?

Will anybody watch that fight? Wait a minute…will I watch that fight?

Y’know what, I just might. Granted, old-timers games only work in baseball, but Mayorga might make it into a wild three-rounder, with somebody going out on his shield. Neither guy is likely to do his legacy any good that night—Mosley is 43, Mayorga is 41—but it could be a fight people are talking about around the water cooler the next day.

Heck, yeah. I’ll watch it. (I like Japanese monster movies, too.)

Broner can now add crabs to his growing list of “credentials” that allegedly include sexism, porn videos, vile toilet scenes, and doing nasty things to sweaty strippers in plain sight.

Like Bugs Bunny said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome. That’s why I’m rooting for Al Haymon, he is the new Wile E Coyote, seeking a new approach to get that bird.
