The first time American Jack Britton fought England’s Ted Kid Lewis, chaos erupted in the first round. Britton’s manager, “Dumb” Dan Morgan, noticed Lewis was wearing a mouthpiece — legal in the UK, but not in the U.S. — and raised hell.

When a livid Lewis spat the mouthpiece onto the canvas to have his say, “Dumb” Dan scooped it up and flung it into the crowd. It was an auspicious beginning to what might have been the nastiest rivalry in boxing history. Britton and Lewis fought each other 20 times, and never got any friendlier.

Boxing historian extraordinaire Christopher James Shelton joined us on the July 26 edition of The Ringside Boxing Show (stepping in for last-minute scratch Keith Thurman) to regale us with tales of Britton, one of the most-colorful boxers in an era full of colorful boxers.

Shelton’s segment is preceded by triple-team expertise by John J. Raspanti, Rizwaan Zahid and Travis Hartman, who tell us who really won the Pascal-Gonzalez war, marvel at Kovalev’s terrorization of the light heavyweight division, debate whether Mayweather is actually headed for the exit sign, and tell us whether a lucky Golovkin-Lemieux spectator is likely to catch a human head.

This is the kind of fun and fast-moving hour you’ll only find on The Ringside Boxing Show.
