With last night’s victory, a rematch with pound-for-pound superstar and lineal champion Roman Gonzalez might be in the offing…

Saturday night at Centro Convenciones in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, WBA/WBO flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2, 24 KOs), aka El Gallo, from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, retained his title against former WBA World flyweight champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (39-6-1, 28 KOs), the southpaw from Empalme, Sonora, Mexico, scoring a KO at 1:16 of round 10, after knocking him down seven times.

It was Estrada’s fifth defense of the WBA/WBO titles he won from Milan Melindo (29-0 at the time) in 2013.

The first five rounds could have gone either way. The wheels came off the Marquez bus in round six. He was dropped twice in the sixth, twice in the seventh, once in the ninth, and twice in round 10.

Although he’s only 27 years old, to Estrada’s 25, Marquez’s punch resistance is virtually nil. Every punch the champ landed seemed to do damage. El Gallo hits hard but is not a knockout artist, per se. It’s that Marquez, who turned pro in 2005, has been fighting the best of the best lighter weight fighters for a long time.

With last night’s victory, a rematch with pound-for-pound superstar and lineal champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) might be in the offing. When they fought in 2012 for the WBA World light flyweight belt Chocolatito won by unanimous decision. Estrada may need his Chocolatito fix. Boxing may need its Chocolatito fix, as well.
