Evander Holyfield on Mayweather-McGregor
“Floyd is a better boxer. If they box, Floyd gonna win. They do MMA, Floyd gonna lose.”

Former heavyweight champion of the world Evander Holyfield knows a thing or two about boxing. Among the great overachievers in boxing history, he thinks more of the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor than most of his peers.

“I think it’s a legitimate fight,” said Holyfield, putting to rest the idea that the fix is in. “There’s no doubt McGregor—I think he can handle the shots, because anybody who can do that can handle the shots. They’re not afraid. But do they have skills?”

McGregor has skills of a sort for a different sport than boxing. Boxing and MMA are martial arts. They are combat sports. But the differences outweigh the similarities.

“Floyd is a better boxer,” Holyfield told Sports Illustrated. “So if they box, Floyd gonna win. They do that MMA, Floyd gonna lose. I’m talkin’ about whatever the person specializes in.”

In other words, under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, McGregor’s chances are slim to none.

“If the great guys today can’t beat Floyd,” said Holyfield, “what makes you think a guy just because he can choke people out? You can’t choke people out in this.”

There are other illegal tactics if frustration sets in.

I wonder which of them we’ll see.
