As is customary or per the usual, a high profile fight in Sin City is preceded by Friday night curtain raiser of sorts. One night before boxing fans descend upon the T-Mobile Arena or perhaps to a friend’s house for the hotly anticipated showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., the sleek and chic Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will play host to a evening of contests headlined by former featherweight champion, Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-1, 17 KO’s). The Cuban expat, known as “El Ciclon de Guantanamo”, has amassed a notable résumé (depending on who is asked) throughout his ten-year professional career.

He was indeed among some “Top 10” lists earlier this decade based on impressive wins over such names as Orlando Salido, Jorge Solis and Daniel Ponce de Leon. Gamboa was riding high until he was soundly humbled in June 2014 by then lightweight champion Terence Crawford. The ninth round knockout loss included four trips to the canvas and was further compounded by the fact that he hadn’t fought in over a year due to various out-of-the-ring issues. Since then, the 35-year-old Miami resident has fought just three times. He’ll have the chance to see where he stands on Friday night at the Cosmopolitan when he faces Robinson Castellanos (23-12, 13 KO’s) of Mexico, who by chance has not fought since March of last year. The Gamboa/Castellanos contest will air live on ESPN this Friday, May 5 (8PM EST/5PM PST).
