Gogarty vs. Martin?

Gogarty vs. Martin?

The 1997 WIBF Champion—Deirdre Gogarty—is training for a comeback fight. Details of her first bout are unconfirmed, but her ultimate goal is a rematch with former champion, Christy Martin. Curious about Gogarty’s fitness, I visit the gym.

It’s 92 degrees in South Louisiana, and the salty smell of sweat permeates the Ragin’ Cajun Boxing Club. Gogarty slips on her boxing boots, then wraps and duct tapes her hands. She stretches and bounces on her toes to radio Hip Hop and R&B, which blares from large speakers that drown out the whir of a mammoth fan.

Two male heavyweights take to the ring and a three-minute bell adds to the soundtrack of fists pounding flesh. Other fighters begin to roll in, and the gym’s energy rises with shouts of “You just lost that round!” and “Pick it up!”

While Deirdre shadowboxes, I ask light heavyweight Anthony Russell if he’s nervous about his upcoming NABO title fight in Chicago. “I’m comin’ home with that belt,” he says, and strolls off to wrap hands.

Gogarty finishes her warm-up and spars with 15-year-old Brandon Schoeffler, the only boxer in the gym close to her size. In the first, she knocks down her teammate with a left hook to the body.

Sopping wet after three rounds with Brandon, Deirdre hits the floor to crunch abs, medicine-ball style. She hops up to work mitts and tells me she’s tired and sore after an earlier spar with power-hitter Chad Trahan, an agile middleweight who recently turned pro and won his first four fights—three by knockout in the first round.

I wonder out loud if she should rest instead of working mitts. But Deirdre sets me straight. “It’s a thin line between listening to your body and not pushing hard enough,” she says. “You have to work through everything.”

Her coach, former heavyweight Beau Williford, gloves up Gogarty. Her fists hit the hand pads held by Anthony Russell who is 6’3. Deirdre is 5’6. I watch with longtime contender Jason Papillion, who has known the champ since she first landed in the United States from Ireland, yearning to fight.

“We’ve been there for each other,” says Papillion. “And I love to be around her. She’s a hard worker—she’ll make you work. She’s the only girl, and she pushes all of us. No one wants to be outworked by a girl.”

As Gogarty and Russell wind down, Beau shouts: “Don’t stop!” So Deirdre jogs in place and hits the pads in a flurry—bam-bam-bam—again and again. She finally drops her arms, and the gym is quiet. The last male fighter drives away. But Deirdre runs sprints in the parking lot.

The woman who went the distance with Christy Martin in a legendary battle at the MGM Grand in Vegas still hungers to fight. And I believe a rematch between the two former champions would be the perfect overture to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where female boxers will be allowed to compete for the first time.

I witnessed the bout between Gogarty & Martin in Las Vegas. I thought that Gogarty had fought a splendid fight and had either just edged the bout, or should have gotten a draw. A rematch between these two icons of the ring is definitely in order.

Anyone can be a fighter but not everyone can be a boxer. Deirdre Gogarty is a boxer and a really good one. She is better known as the female trainer of future champions, the humble warrior, or just Deirdre. Regardless, she broke into the international scene with her mix of speed, punching power, and granite chin. She fought Christy Martin to a standstill in one of the best female fights of all time and showed that women can take a technical approach to boxing, a sport that tests two combatants against one another in the purest form of science that most of the public call ‘fighting’. To watch these two ‘boxers’ compete again is almost like waiting for an Oscar Nominee to perform in a long anticipated movie that we have been waiting to see. Let’s make this happen.  It’ll be fun….but most of all….It will be a ‘real’ boxing match…with real competitors…...
    KEEP PUNCHING!

Wow!  This is just a thrill.  Diedre is not only a true asset to the proffessional boxing community but she is also a major asset as a dedicated coach/trainer in our struggling amatuer boxing community.  I intend to “plagiarize”  “THE” quote of quotes written in this article as a motto to motivate our very own young men and women who dream of becoming someone in the boxing arena ....“it’s a thin line between listening to your body and NOT pushing hard enough.. you have to work through everything”  This is so very true NOT only in sports training .. Not only during championship bouts… BUT ....LIFE IN GENERAL!  As a Coach and Trainer I am looking forward to watching Deidre in action with my young boxing hopefuls.  In addition as boxing fan’s we will be with Deidre in heart from bout to bout.

I love the example Deirdre is setting!  She’s an amazing person and I am thrilled to be able to follow her comeback!  Goes to show you that age is just a number!  Determination and heart is what gets you places!  Best of luck D!

Darrelyn, you now KNOW the boxing world, and I am now a new fan! I would love to see this match happen and would do what I can to go!

  11. Debra Marrs 11:28am, 05/15/2011

I can’t imagine what it’s like to train and be a fighter like Deirdre. I admire her for all the work it takes and the courage to stay true to her heart for another round.

My favorite “keeper” quote rings true for anyone who has a set of goals they’re working toward, even writers: “It’s a thin line between listening to your body and not pushing hard enough,” she says. “You have to work through everything.”

Great piece, Darrelyn! Congrats on the new gig too!

Deirdre Gogarty.  The woman whose match against Christy Martin defined the moment that pulled women’s boxing out of obscurity and into the stratosphere previously reserved only for the elite boy’s boxing club, the ones whose matches were the stuff legends are made of.  How fitting that she remains at the edge of every boxing fans’ stream of consciousness and continues to garner well deserved admiration everywhere she goes.  She did very well by hiring the very talented and insightful Darrelyn S. to edit her memoir.  Darrelyn did her due diligence on the research end and as a fellow female, creates a more universally appealing body of work.  We all applaud the come-back of Deirdre and look equally as forward to reading the memoir. As a caveat…when will someone come out and make a stand for equality in pay for the women vs. the men?  If women’s boxing is set to enter the Olympics for the very first time in 2012 isn’t it time to retreat from the Fred Flintsone/Dark Ages mentality with regard to this?  Where is Billy Jean King when you need her?!

I would love to see this fight happen;)
    How exciting!

Excellent all the way around. And I love this: “It’s a thin line between listening to your body and not pushing hard enough,” she says. “You have to work through everything.”

  15. Christian Allman 02:47pm, 05/14/2011

Great story, Darrelyn - and thanks for capturing the drama and excitement of the prospects of Gogarty’s comeback.  I hope the national media gives this the attention it deserves!

Great article! So nice to see the boxer lady excelling in an unusual sport. :)

I used to watch the Friday night fights on t.v. with my father and this piece inspires me to write it about that in the book I am now working on about the way memory gets passed on ... Thank you, Darrelyn

  18. Aspen Real Life 05:19am, 05/14/2011

I, on the other hand, am not good when watching fights, but Darrelyn’s writing of Deidre’s story is compelling, drawing me in and now…I’m ready for the next punch .

  19. kathryn magendie 04:05am, 05/14/2011

Great article, as usual, Darrelyn . . .

Love this: “It’s a thin line between listening to your body and not pushing hard enough,” she says. “You have to work through everything.”

  20. Jack 02:55am, 05/14/2011

Wow, blast from the past, I remember that fight. I hadn’t heard anything about a rematch, though. Is it in the works?

  21. Jill George 10:35pm, 05/13/2011

What a great article Darrelyn. As always you have opened an entire new world for me. I’ve always been a closet boxing fan but had no idea that both sexes can compete in the same ring against each other. How exciting is this true compettion in the purest sense. Keeping everyone on their toes. Following the boxing comeback thru your writing makes me actually feel the antipation build with each sparring round right thru to her last sprints in parking lot. you’ve broght me into this realm with your artful way with words that I feel like I’m right there hearing “Bam, Bam, Bam. Can’t wait to follow more of this exciting xtory that you’re painting for all of us Darrelyn. Thank you.

  22. Charlie Haas 09:06pm, 05/13/2011

Splendid piece. Would love to see more Gogarty and/or Saloom if you’ve got it.

  23. Susan Cushman 07:18pm, 05/13/2011

Papillion says, “No one wants to be outworked by a girl.” Gogarty seems to bring to boxing what women bring to other fields of work—helping make men be the best they can be:-) Nice article, Darrelyn.

  24. Debbie cutler 07:10pm, 05/13/2011

I think it would be so exciting for these women to fight again.

  25. Donna Carrick 06:54pm, 05/13/2011

Great article, Darrelyn! Thanks for sharing it.

  26. Woddy Johnson 06:15pm, 05/13/2011

Great idea. After spending $70 to watch Mosley run and hide from Pacquiao, it would be quite a change to see these two “fighters” go at it again.

  27. Jenny Fickey 05:39pm, 05/13/2011

Agreed! I hope Gogarty’s comeback fight will be against Martin. I think 2012 is going a momentous year for Gogarty and the sport of women’s boxing. And I hope Darrelyn will continue to narrate the journey. Reading Darrelyn’s article, I felt I was sitting next to her in the gym, breathing in the competition and sweat.

  28. David Hunter 04:41pm, 05/13/2011

Wonderful!  Boxing has been at a low-point for the past decade.  Perhaps this rematch would rekindle some of the magic that was boxing, and as Layna said, an excellent way to begin the Summer Olympics.

    Great article!

  29. Kathy Stillman 04:29pm, 05/13/2011

Yes! I would love to see the match with Gogarty and Christy Martin.

  30. Layna Pimentel 04:28pm, 05/13/2011

Fantastic article, Darrelyn. I have to agree. A rematch between the two would be an excellent way to begin the Summer Olympics.
