“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”—Robert Burns

Greg Cohen’s inaugural card on CBS is going on as scheduled Friday night. It is not, however, going on as planned.

There have been no disruptions concerning the 10-round main event between “Hurricane” Dennis Hogan (20-0-1, 7 KOs) and Tyrone “Young Gun” Brunson (22-4-1, 21 KOs). But the co-main between lightweight Tony “Lightning” Luis and veteran Ira Terry (26-13, 16 KOs) is no more.

Luis will still be fighting, but instead of Terry his opponent will be British veteran Derry Mathews (37-9-2, 20 KOs), and instead of fighting in Minnesota, he will be fighting at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, for the interim WBA lightweight title.

It gets even more complicated.

Mathews was originally scheduled to fight WBA lightweight champion Richar Abril, who won the title by beating Sharif Bogere in March. But Abril was forced to pull out of the fight with Mathews due to illness.

Abril’s replacement was unbeaten Venezuelan slugger Ismael Barroso (17-0-2, 16 KOs).

But that fight hit a snag as well. Barroso, who is promoted by GCP, was refused a visa to enter England. It seems no such problems exist in the US, so he will fight Ira Terry, Luis’ original opponent, while Luis gets a shot at the title by fighting Derry Matthews.

In lieu of a roadmap, Cohen said, “It worked out well for everyone. Tony Luis was high enough in the ratings and ready to fight, so he’s one of the few fighters in the world who could have stepped into this important fight on such short notice. And fortunately, he is a GCP fighter as well, so we made it happen quickly and he is on his way to the UK. Tony gets his dream shot at a world championship and the fans in Hinckley, and on CBS Sports Network, will get their first look at one of the most fearsome punchers in boxing, Ismael Barroso. So it seems that everyone wins in this unique situation.”

John McCain an ex-boxer threatened to kick ex-boxer Harry Reid’s ass. Apparently Harry’s brother Larry beat him to it on New Years eve at a family gathering in Henderson. Larry described as a short, pugnacious drunk showed up at an AA meeting near Reid’s home on New Years Eve drunk, bloody, disheveled, with a swollen left hand seeking sanctuary and claiming that the Secret Service was after him. No word if Larry is an ex-pug but we’re pretty sure he has a passable left hook when considering the damage done to the right side of Harry’s face.
