He Don’t Get No Respect
Guevara put up a skilled and courageous fight last December against Leo Santa Cruz.

“With my wife I don’t get no respect. I made a toast on her birthday to ‘the best woman a man ever had.’ The waiter joined me.”—Rodney Dangerfield

Alberto Guevara isn’t getting the respect, or the matches, he deserves.

The Mexican bantamweight put up a skilled and courageous, albeit losing, fight last December against the always impressive Leo Santa Cruz. His reward? A match two months ago against Jose Alfredo Tirado. Who? Bad enough that he was originally scheduled to face a washed-up Genaro Garcia, but Tirado? C’mon!

The downward spiral continues tonight in a six-rounder in Mexico City, Mexico, against Gustavo Sotomayor.

Twenty-two-year-old Guevara (17-1, 6 KOs) is a four-year ring veteran. Prior to his win against Tirado and his loss to Santa Cruz, “El Metro” decisioned Khabir Suleymanov and Raul Hidalgo in, respectively, April and August of last year.

Not exactly an abundance of information on Sotomayor (I couldn’t even determine his age), but here’s what we do know:

He turned pro in 2011, and has a record of three wins, one by TKO, nine losses, and one draw. He fought four times in 2012, losing by unanimous decision to Jorge Otocani in February, Antonio Olguin in March, Rigoberto Calzada in July, and Pedro Melo in November. His most recent win was in 2011, when he beat Alacran Torres by disqualification in what proved to be Torres’ first and only fight. His draw came against Pablo Torres, also in 2011. Oh, and Sotomayor’s nickname is “El Perro.” Any objection, Alfredo Angulo? No? Well, suit yourself.

Guevara has earned the privilege of going up against at least Miniyakhe Sityatha and arguably Hugo Ruiz. Instead, following his well-nigh certain defeat of the singularly unimpressive Sotomayor, he’s likelier to face Adan Osuna or, at best, Bongani Mahlangu.

No respect. No respect at all.
