Hopkins Plays Race Card
You’ve got to hand it to Bernard Hopkins. He’s afraid of nothing and no one. He calls them as he sees them. He lets the chips fall where they may.
The latest victim of a Hopkins tongue-lashing is Donovan McNabb, former quarterback of Hopkins’ hometown Philadelphia Eagles.
Hopkins may be trying to build the gate for his May 21 rematch against Jean Pascal in Montreal, but questioning McNabb’s racial bona fides might not be the best way to go about it.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Hopkins said about McNabb, “He’s got a suntan. That’s all.”
Hopkins believes McNabb dissed him when Hopkins visited the team’s practice sites. Both athletes were at the top of their game at the same time and Philly loved them. Hopkins ruled the middleweights from 1995 to 2005. McNabb joined the Eagles in 1999 and eventually led them to the Super Bowl.
But there was tension between McNabb and Hopkins, or between Hopkins and McNabb, and Bernard doesn’t forgive or forget.
