JoJo Diaz: Bad first day … then OK
And Joseph Diaz Jr. walked away, alongside his dad, wondering what "spar" meant.

Ohh, JoJo wants to fight? JoJo thinks he’s bad? JoJo gonna be a boxer? Maybe JoJo wants to spar! Does JoJo wanna spar?

Schoolyard bullies drove Joseph Diaz Jr. into an El Monte, Calif., boxing gym as a kid, and he found yet another one waiting as soon as he walked through the door.

Ohh, JoJo wants to fight? JoJo thinks he’s bad? JoJo gonna be a boxer? Maybe JoJo wants to spar! Does JoJo wanna spar?

Yeah, Diaz lied, I wanna spar!

Ha! A week from today, JoJo! We’re gonna spar!

Yeah, well, I’ll be here!

Then the bully laughed in his face. And all the other fighters laughed, too. And Joseph Diaz Jr. walked away, alongside his dad, wondering what “spar” meant.

What happened next, and over the following week, is one of the most compelling father/son stories you’ll ever hear, told in full-color eloquence by the 23-year-old Golden Boy prospect during an in-depth interview on The Ringside Boxing Show.

Spoiler alert: Things worked out OK. Diaz (19-0, 11 KOs) will make his HBO debut against Jayson Velez (23-1-1, 16 KOs) on March 26, the co-feature of the Andre Ward-Sullivan Barrera show.
