While waiting for boxing to die, with the requisite prayers that it will live forever, we have good news to report from the ICU, aka the House of Doom and Gloom.

On Saturday, November 21, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs), from Cauguas, Puerto Rico, defends his title against former WBC and WBC welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs), the red-haired wunderkind from Juanacatlán, Jalisco, Mexico.

Rivalries between Puerto Rico and Mexico are nothing new. The list of memorable fights by memorable fighters is as august as it is long. Think Cocoa Kid vs. Kid Azteca, Salvador Sanchez vs. Bazooka Limon, Wilfredo Benitez vs. Carlos Palomino, Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Juan Laporte, Pipino Cuevas vs. Angel Espada, Juan Zurita vs. Sixto Escobar, Giovani Segura vs. Ivan Calderon, and Oscar De La Hoya vs. Felix Trinidad.

The upcoming fight between Cotto and Canelo, two crowd-pleasing, high-intensity, all-action fighters with seven world titles between them, has the potential to be a fight to remember, rather than a fight to forget.

“I am here to fight the best names and the best fighters,” said Cotto. “I will give the fans the fight they want to see. This will be another chapter in my career and I will be ready for him. Fans will enjoy a real fight, another classic battle in the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry.”

Canelo is no less enthusiastic, but a little more talkative.

“Historically, mega-fights are made because fans demand them,” he said. “In this case, the fans have spoken out, longing for this fight, and it is my pleasure to say that it is finally happening. All fights at this level are very important, but this fight in particular has something more. It will hold a special place in history as part of the big rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico, and I promise all the fans that this is going to be an event that will not disappoint.”

Everytime i think of this fight, i hetbthe chills. I cannot wait. Making sure i have the day off work for this one, and a social get-together built for it. I keep thinking, this is where canelo becomes the face of boxing, and i makes me happy… I do not want khan taking a single thing over post-mayweather. It would make me sick. I get it, its not that u get knocked down, its how u get up… But khan has been layed about too many times, by unexpected men, to take anything over. Canelo has been groomed, and is a fighter fans’ fighter, and its clearly time. BUT—-> i respect cotto through and through. Everytime i think of the fight, i think “imma get me a canelo shirt and take him to the 9’s that night”. Then i think, “wait, its against cotto. A man i just cant help but jot root against”. Its gonna be a fighters fight… And i cannot, in my mind’s eye, though i want to, i just cannot see cotto coming out the other side as a shocking winner against this smart fighter with a cannon punch. Canelo gives too much to the boxing comsose, to not get stars in return. Being that cotto has already walked that walk, it just seems time. Tho im sincerely crossing my fingers that cotto lives thrugh it enough to get another big fight after this one, i just cannot help but agree with Chris^^^. I dont think either man hasthe lack of heart to get ko’d, but i think round 7/8/9, canelo becomes canelo for real. To me, cotto will get thru, he has come to far, yet again, lately, to take a ko or possibly even a tko… But there will be many moments that it should prolly happen. The announcers will say “how much more can cotto take before someone stops it for him’. But i think he survives a full, bloody fight on his end, only to bow just like he forced martinez to. Breaks my heart. I fully respect and like cotto… But dont we just see this is where canelo goes up? His only loss is to mayweather, who is supposedly going away. The stars are aligning. And WAMMO, canelo vs ggg next year? Jackpot brutality with wisemen’s talent! And yes, ggg the only man who has the ring awareness mixed with power to give canelo the war. But, yet again, the only punch to have truly stunned canelo thus far is the left hook… Cotto’s new best friend, ala mr roach… Hmmmmmm!

Looking forward to this one. Hope Cotto is ready. He’s had years taken away in his wars over the years.
