Lomachenko vs. Walters Preview
Bob Arum has seen and done it all and has nothing but praise for Vasyl Lomachenko.

“Since he did lose to Salido, Lomachenko can be as technical as he wants, but I am in the hurt business…”

On Saturday, November 26, at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada, WBO World super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4 KOs), the southpaw from Oxnard, California, by way of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Ukraine, defends his title against former WBA Super World featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (26-0-1, 21 KOs), the undefeated knockout artist from Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Lomachenko turned pro at featherweight in 2013 after going 396-1 as an amateur, winning gold in Beijing and London in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Fully formed by the time he entered the pro ranks, his only loss was in his second pro fight to Orlando Salido, the rugged veteran from Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico. The matchmaking was a rare miscalculation from Top Rank, who acknowledged Lomachenko’s potential from the start.

Walters has taken a more conventional route. He turned pro in 2008 in Panama, his home away from home, and distinguished himself from the start as a take-no-prisoners kind of fighter. His last fight, in December 2015, the only blemish on his otherwise spotless record, ended in a majority draw victory over one-time underdog Jason Sosa, who has since gone on to win and defend the WBA World super featherweight title.

There had been much talk of Lomachenko and Walters fighting at featherweight, talk which seemed to last forever but failed to materialize. First Walters moved up in weight. Then it was Lomachenko’s turn. But now the two top men in a stacked super featherweight division are finally going to get it on, and thankfully it’s not on pay-per-view.

Lomachenko’s promoter, the inimitable Bob Arum, has seen and done it all and has nothing but praise for Lomachenko.

“Vasyl Lomachenko is technically the best fighter that I have seen since the early Muhammad Ali,” said Arum during a recent teleconference call. “There is nobody that I have seen, and there have been a lot of great technical fighters that I have seen—Alexis Arguello was one, Floyd Mayweather certainly, Manny Pacquiao—but there has been nobody with the skills that Vasyl Lomachenko has.”

It’s hard to agree with Arum, without a fight, but in this case he is spot-on.

“This is a very important bout for me because many boxing experts and many people in boxing rank Walters as the highest-rated fighter in our division,” Lomachenko said. “He is a very hard puncher and a very good boxer and it’s a very important thing to me to fight the best and it’s important for me because everyone says he is a very good fighter.

“I think it is going to be very, very hard for me in the first four rounds, then after that I will be trying to terminate the bout.”

Sounds like a good plan, but Nicholas Walters has a plan of his own.

“I don’t think this is a different Lomachenko from the guy that lost to Salido,” Walters said. “He is the same Lomachenko.

“They say a leopard cannot change his spots, right? Since he did lose to Salido, he can be as technical as he wants, but I am in the hurt business. He can come in with his technical fight on Saturday. But this is a gladiator sport and I fight all of my fights like a gladiator.”
