"If [Morales] wants the rematch with me to unify the titles, I’m ready for him in December.”

To the surprise of no one, WBA super lightweight champion Marcos Maidana (31-2, 28 KOs) crushed Petr Petrov (29-3-2, 13 KOs) at the Sociedad Alemana de Villa Ballester in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Friday night.

The overmatched Russian was dropped once in the first, and twice in the fourth round leading to a KO.

“It was great fighting before my own people,” said Maidana. “They gave me tremendous support as they always do. I was a little nervous in the first two rounds but then I was able to do what I had been training for. Petrov is a skillful fighter but couldn’t take my punches.”

Maidana accepted Petrov as a last minute replacement after Robert Guerrero withdrew from their Aug. 27 fight with an injured shoulder. With Petrov out of the way, Maidana is looking for greener pastures, and more credible competition, and has his eye on WBC champion Erik Morales.

“Morales has been saying many things and calling me out. It’s not personal because I respect him. He did his part against Cano and I did my part against Petrov. So if he wants the rematch with me to unify the titles, I’m ready for him in December.”

Maidana may be ready for Morales. But is Morales ready for Maidana? Morales had a good night when he fought Maidana, even though he lost. He had a good night against Cano last week on the Mayweather-Ortiz undercard. But Morales, at age 35, has a bad night coming. And that might be the night he rematches with Maidana.
