Randy “El Matador” Caballero, who won the vacant IBF bantamweight championship by decisioning Stuart Hall in Monaco in October, will make his first title defense on February 27, 2015, taking on Alberto “Metro” Guevara over a scheduled 12 rounds at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Born in Indio 24 years ago, the four-year pro is undefeated, winning 13 of 22 by knockout. It was in November 2013 that he stopped one of my favorite bantams, the limited but very tough Jessy Cruz. “The Little Barber” hasn’t fought since.

“This is a night I’ve dreamed about for a long time,” says the recently crowned champ. “I always said that the only thing better than winning a world title at home would be defending it here. I’m going to be tough and impress my fans at Fantasy Springs.”

Guevara is a five-year pro with a record of 18 wins, six by knockout, and two losses, one by knockout. Metro tried for the IBF once before, in December 2012, losing to Leo Santa Cruz by unanimous decision.

The 24-year-old Mexican has all the hitting power of a maxed-out Maxie Rosenbloom, but he’s tough and able. Thing is, he’s a rusty nail. And I don’t mean the cocktail. He hasn’t fought since November 2013, when he lost his shot at the WBC, kayoed by Shinsuke Yamanaka in the ninth. His most recent win came in July 2013, decisioning Jonathan Vidal.

“Randy Caballero is a good, young champion and he’s fighting in his backyard,” says Guevara. “But I feel like this is my time. I like being the underdog and that will make my victory sweeter on February 27.”

Uh-uh. Caballero by hotly contested but clear unanimous decision.

Steve Smoger’s motto: “I let the fighters fight.” Jack Reiss’s motto should be: “I make the fighters fight!”

Randy was born in Indio which is a long, long way from Monaco and from Tokyo as well for that matter. Randy’s family roots are in Central America….not Nicaraugua or Panama….. some country that doesn’t have a great boxing tradition…...El Salvador! Jack Reiss officiating in the Kohei bout in the video above….Jack a real busybody the other night (seemed like he was everywhere and into everybody’s business way too much and fist bumping just about anybody who got in his line of fire), gave a guy a full 10 second count (he actually stopped counting at eight and asked the fighter “are you gonna get up” then counted nine) then warranted him good to go when the guy reluctantly decided to give it a try at what should have been ten….in another bout called a blatant low blow as a punch to the elbow and told the victim, Chris Martin in so many words to shake it off cause you’re good to go too, whether you know it or not!
