McGirt defended his IBF junior welterweight title against Taylor in his first shot at the crown.

On Sept. 3, 1988, at Harrah’s Marina Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, IBF junior welterweight champion Buddy McGirt defended the title he won seven months earlier by stopping 25-0 Frankie Warren. His opponent in AC was 19-0 Meldrick Taylor in his first shot at the crown. McGirt at 38-1-1 was the complete professional who could box as well as slug. Taylor was the the young gun who was riding high, and nothing in Buddy’s arsenal was about to slow him down…

    I remember this fight well as it seemed to herald the emergence of a potential superstar in Taylor-the heartbreaking defeat to Chavez of course derailing those prospects despite Taylor becoming a two weight champion!
