Less than thirty days now stand between the anticipation of boxing fans worldwide and the middleweight unification showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in Las Vegas. The contest known as “Supremacy” became a sold out event at the new T-Mobile Arena in a matter of days, so the interest is certainly present. However, it’s often been the case in the professional fight game that the more attractive a main event appears to be, the more likely it becomes that the undercard will be in desperate need of air freshener.

One of the sure highlights of the bouts which are set to precede the Canelo/Golovkin showdown on September 16 would have to be the WBC USNBC super lightweight title defense by unbeaten Antonio “Relentless” Orozco against Roberto “Massa” Ortiz. As of Friday, it seems that more pieces will have to be moved around to promote an undercard for celebrities and A-listers in Las Vegas to miss next month because Orozco and Ortiz are now set to fight one week later at the Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles.

In a press release sent out by Golden Boy Promotions on Friday, California native Orozco (26-0, 17 KO’s) and Torreon, Coahuila, MX fighter Ortiz (35-1-2, 26 KO’s) will now co-headline the night alongside Jorge Linares and Luke Campbell, who will battle for the WBA, WBC Diamond and Ring Magazine lightweight world championship. The event will be televised live on HBO’s ‘World Championship Boxing’ on Saturday, September 23 beginning at 10pm ET/PT.

“I’m happy to have an opportunity to fight at the Forum, where there have been many iconic fights,” said Antonio Orozco in the Golden Boy Promotions press release.

“I’m looking to leave an imprint there on September 23. We know Roberto Ortiz is a tremendous fighter. He definitely comes to fight. He’s aggressive. He’s a very strong fighter and this is one of those matchups where styles make fights.”

Ortiz shared the excitement of his California opponent. “I’m happy for the big opportunity that Golden Boy Promotions is giving me, being on such a big event as Linares-Campell,” he said. “The truth is that I feel motivated and strong for this fight. I know that Orozco is a great fighter, that it’s going to be a great fight and that the people will walk away happy come fight night.”

Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya had the following to say about the newly moved matchup between Orozco and Ortiz.

“Antonio is a tremendous fighter and one of the top 10 super lightweights in the sport today. He is a rugged fighter that pushes himself and his opponents in the ring. Fans can expect to see a great show in the ring when he challenges Ortiz in the co-feature to Linares vs. Campbell on September 23.”
