A good scrap coming up on July 20 at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, when junior welters Frankie Gomez and DeMarcus Corley square off for a scheduled 10-rounder.

A three-year pro, 21-year-old Gomez (15-0, 11 KOs) is a fan favorite, living up as he does to his nickname of “Pitbull.” A resident of East L.A., he fought twice in 2012, stopping Manuel Leyva by third-round TKO in November and Pavel Miranda by first-round KO in December. He’s already fought once this year, beating Lanard Lane by unanimous decision in February.

A southpaw, 39-year-old Corley (39-20-1, 23 KOs) is a tough and experienced 17-year pro who’s fought some of the best, including Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto. A former champ, the D.C. resident won the vacant WBO junior welterweight title by stopping Felix Flores by first-round TKO in 2001, a title he lost to Zab Judah by split decision in 2003.

“Chop Chop” fought three times last year, beating Gabriel Bracero by unanimous decision in January, stopping Paul McCloskey by 10th-round TKO in May, and losing to Viktor Postol by unanimous decision in October.

There’s more boxing savvy in Corley’s piss than there is Gomez’s whole body. But Corley’s best days are history, and more ancient than recent. Prior to his defeat of Bracero in January 2012, “Chop Chop” hadn’t won since July 2010, when he stopped Damian Fuller by fourth-round TKO. In between those two wins were six consecutive losses, including to Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse, and Ruslan Provodnikov.

As for Gomez…maybe he should change his name to McCoy, as in “the real.” He’s the goods all right, and his winning streak will continue on July 20 when he beats Corley by unanimous decision.

Gomez has suffered a knee injury, and the fight’s been canceled.

Irish:  A little concerned about Silva, given his recent loss and in combination with Golden Boy’s indifference to him.

My favorite current actor is Robert Duvall; of all time, Humphrey Bogart.  Speaking of James Lipton, I once met his wife, Kedakai Turner.  Have an older version of “Clue”?  She was Miss Scarlet:

“Corley’s Piss”...I like it!  The name, not the, uh, you know.

Clarence George-James Lipton says Gandolfini combined a huge talent with masterful technical skills. Dennis Hopper says it’s all about sense memory and Alec Baldwin says that the best actors are mimics. I say there isn’t an actor alive who can hold a candle to Daniel Day-Lewis. You say “The Hustler” doesn’t stand the test of time and I say that Paul Newman gave his all time best performance in “The Verdict”.

Clarence George-Thanks for the heads up…. looks like another diamond in the rough like El Pantera…which reminds me….there’s a micro brewery in Denver that brews a pale lager with the brand name “Corley’s Piss”.....not!
