Title challenger Tommy Karpency (21-3-1) traveled to Chicago last week to meet local Andrzej Fonfara (22-2) for the vacant IBO super middleweight title. Fonfara brought a UIC Pavilion crowd of over 4,000 to its feet in the first and seventh rounds. Midway through the first, Fonfara knocked Karpency back and into the ropes for a knockdown. Soon after referee Pete Podgorski gave him the mandatory eight-count, Fonfara dropped Karpency again. He was able to survive the round, but lost it 10-7 on all three judges’ scorecards.

Tommy Karpency showed tremendous heart in rounds two through six, coming back and actually taking the action to Fonfara for the most part. Fonfara also showed true grit, considering the after the fact knowledge that he was fighting with a badly bruised, perhaps broken right hand from round two forward. Rounds two and three were awarded to Karpency on all three judges’ cards. Rounds four and five were split, with judge Ted Gimza awarding both rounds to Fonfara 10-9. Mike Fitzgerald and Bill Lerch scored both rounds for Karpency. All three judges awarded round six to Karpency.

After round six, Karpency nearly quit in the corner—most likely due to fatigue—but was pushed to continue by his chief second. After a desperate but effective flurry by Karpency in the seventh, both men clinched, mainly due to Karpency’s sheer exhaustion. Karpency fell to the canvas after a brief tangle. The referee immediately signaled no knockdown. After Karpency gestured to the referee for help getting up, Podgorski advised him that he needed to get up on his own. Karpency did, but then twice informed the referee that he did not want to continue. The fight ended in the seventh as a TKO win for Fonfara. The total scores for the match easily forced it into the most competitive mathematical category.

The total Pod Index for the fight was 77.8%, well above the 69.8% average for the most competitive fights. Below are the round by round scores and Pod Index for the match.
