Povetkin-Chagaev on the Net
On Saturday, Aug. 27, in a fight broadcast live from Erfurt, Germany, undefeated 2004 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15 KOs) squares off against former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KOs) for the vacant WBA heavyweight title.
“I have won the Olympic gold medal and I have been World and European Amateur Champion,” said Povetkin. “Now I want to finally accomplish my goal of winning the world title as a professional. I have a lot of respect for Chagaev, but he will not get in my way.”
Chagaev plans to do exactly that, to get in his opponent’s way. “Povetkin is a strong fighter,” he said, “but I want to become world champion again and win back my old title. I am highly motivated.”
Also on the card, WBA/WBO Intercontinental heavyweight champion Robert Helenius (15-0, 10 KOs) defends his regional titles against former WBO heavyweight champion Siarhei Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KOs).
The four fighters have a 95% winning percentage, with 66% of those wins coming by knockout, which means the fists will fly on Aug. 27.
EPIX will broadcast the Povetkin-Chagaev and Helenius-Liakhovich live, and EpixHD.com will live stream the fights at 5 pm ET / 2 pm PT.
