Ramblings from a boxing fan on Mayweather-McGregor
Of course Mayweather wins this 19 times out of 20. It was the same story against Berto.

Do you think they care if the 300,000 hardcore boxing fans, who watch Chocolatito and Crawford box religiously, actually buy this? Not really…

As a boxing fan, I feel obligated to hate Mayweather vs. McGregor and think it is a farce. My actual feelings on the bout are a lot more mixed. Of course Mayweather wins this 19 times out of 20. It was the same story against Berto. So why can we not just enjoy the sheer theatre? Is it because he is an MMA guy (the enemy)? Because it would ruin boxing if he won? Wrong. If McGregor wins, I am very sure he stays in boxing. He can make way more money in boxing. McGregor Promotions will likely find it easier to make inroads into boxing than MMA. Maybe even if he loses he stays in boxing. There has to be at least one more mega money boxing match out there for him. Probably co-promoted by Mayweather and McGregor Promotions, because let’s be honest there is literally nothing between them. I am sure they like each other. They definitely respect each other. In fact, the McGregor character (for as much as it’s a character) is a rip on the Mayweather character.

And what does boxing currently lack? Star power. UFC over the last 5 years was much better at creating stars and although Conor may be their only one right now, it brings a star to boxing even for one night. Who is bigger in boxing than Conor? Floyd! Maybe Canelo on a strong day? I am bored of Conor now though. The chat just doesn’t interest me anymore, it seems less funny and witty than it once was. MMA and specifically the UFC against boxing will sell. How many bouts for Anthony Joshua make more money than Stipe Miocic? If Conor sets a trail that he can take advantage of and profit from it would not surprise me one bit.

Of the millions that buy this fight on PPV, how many watch Gervonta Davis box? If it is more than a million, then that is a win for boxing. Boxing fans seem to feel the need to put their opinion everywhere and slam this fight, it’s unnecessary. If you don’t want to watch the fight, you don’t have to buy it. This isn’t for you. Do you think they care if the 300,000 hardcore boxing fans, who watch Chocolatito and Crawford box religiously, actually buy this? Not really. It’s for the casuals. These are the people that boxing fans seem to not give a care about but who all the boxers and promoters are aiming to attract.

This could also be the last time we see Mayweather in a ring. Maybe it is not the test of his skills that really intrigues boxing fans. Was that an option though? I felt that Mayweather would only return if the risk/reward ratio was in his favor. Boxers like Spence and Thurman arguably do not offer the reward of a McGregor fight and are more likely to beat him. The only risks for Floyd are if he loses; what this does to his legacy. It just seems boxing fans are complaining because people aren’t into the super flyweight triple header on September 9th—if you don’t get this but also hate this fight then you are probably trying too hard. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you.
