Rios vs. Alvarado: Down the Road?

“Both fighters have a lot at stake in this must win fight. As a result, the boxing fans will likely witness a savage fight for however long it lasts.”—Rico Aguirre (The Boxing Tribune)

Last September, I did a “what if” of sorts when I wrote a piece on the possibility of James Kirkland going up against Alfredo Angulo. Specifically, I said “If rumors out of Mexico materialize (and they are only rumors), boxing fans may be treated to a potential spectacular shootout between light middleweights James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland (29-1) and Alfredo “Perro” Angulo (20-1) with ultra violence in the offing.” As it turned out, the two fought on November 5, 2011, in Cancun, Mexico with the result exceeding the hype. Both men waged war; in fact, the back-and-forth first round was one for our collective memory bank.

Now there are rumors afloat that Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (30-0-1) may be fighting Mike “Mile High” Alvarado (33-0) in October at the junior welterweight limit. If so, we can expect another all-out action fight with both men trying to own the phone booth. Given his issues at the scale, “Bam Bam” will be fighting for redemption, while a win for the aggressive Alvarado would propel him to a title clash.

The rumored affair would be huge if it gets made. Both men bring plenty of menace into the ring and likely would stage a throwback type of battle perhaps in the vein of Rios vs. Antillon or Alvarado vs. Prescott. Both are heavy handed, incoming pressure fighters and that spells K-N-O-C-K-O-U-T.

Given what appears to be a boring August, hopefully this will become more than a possibility.

These would indeed be good fights for the fans to see.

    It’s official.

On October 13th, former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) will be facing unbeaten light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, according to the 26-year-old Rios. The Alvarado-Rios fight will be taking place on the same card as Nonito Donaire against possibly Toshiaki Nishioka.

That is true, but this is boxing where the operative word is “unfair.”

Ted Sares-Life is not fair….in my view Abril earned the right to be mauled and beaten to a pulp by Alvarado.
