Roach and Manny Agree to Disagree

Roach and Manny Agree to Disagree
"Victor Ortiz is one of the nicest guys in the world, and maybe he's too nice to be a boxer."

Freddie Roach looks at many Pacquiao like he’s his son. But like fathers and sons throughout the ages, they do not always agree.

Their disagreement is not the knockdown/drag out Mayweather 24/7 version. But they’re on different sides of the fence when it comes to Victor Ortiz and what befell him three weeks ago.

Although Pacquiao called what transpired “very poor sportsmanship,” Roach believes Floyd Mayweather did nothing wrong.

“I’ve always said that Victor Ortiz is one of the nicest guys in the world,” Roach told RingTV, “and that maybe he’s too nice to be a boxer. But it finally caught up with him.”

With referee Joe Cortez in never-never land, Ortiz failed to protect himself and Floyd took his best shot.

“The thing is, you blame the referee for not saying to box, and you claim that it looked like he was talking to an official outside of the ring,” said Roach. “You say that until the referee says box, then you’re not really supposed to box. But, I mean, you are told that you should protect yourself at all times.”

That’s the argument Mayweather boosters have been saying all along.

“You know that there are a lot of different ways that you can look at this situation,” Roach said. “But if the guy is going to apologize for the third time, I probably would hit him too. This is a boxing match. It’s not chess. Was it a little bit of a sucker shot? Yes. But Victor put himself in that position.”

I see boxing.com is still running pieces regarding the Maweather v Ortiz fight. Interesting.

Robert—This admission from Roach is all I need: “...Was it a little bit of a sucker shot? Yes.”  A “little” pregnant?  A “little” bit of a sucker punch?  Why the distinction?  Pregnant is pregnant and a sucker-punch is a sucker-punch—little or big is of no consequence as a distinction.
