Rocky Mountain High

Rocky Mountain High
Some have called it an instant classic. Others have called it Denver’s boxing Super Bowl.

On Oct. 19 at the First Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado, Ruslan Provodnikov gets it on with “Mile High” Mike Alvarado…

Sometimes a loss can be a win. That was the case last week with Nihito Harakawa’s performance against Omar Narvaez. It was the case last April when Ruslan Provodnikov got it on with Timothy Bradley.

Mark your calendars. On Oct. 19 at the First Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado, a Denver suburb, Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs) gets it on with “Mile High” Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs) for bragging rights as to who is the toughest hombre in boxing.

Provodnikov and Alvarado both participated in possible Fights of the Year in 2013, against Tim Bradley and Brandon Rios respectively, both of whom have blockbuster bouts of their own in the works.

Although Ruslan lost his last fight, in part because of a couple of blown calls by the ref, and Mile High won his last fight by outboxing Bam Bam, all will be forgiven and forgotten when the opening bell sounds in Colorado.

This is one of those fights where that all that matters is the fight itself.

Although the ink on the contracts is still wet, the superlatives are flying fast and furious. Some have called it an instant classic. Others have called it Denver’s boxing Super Bowl. That may or may not be so. Superlatives are generally are more authoritative after the fact than before.

But for those who like their boxing hot, and which of us does not, Alvarado-Provodnikov could be a barnburner.
