Bouts aren’t won or lost with fighter’s mouths, which is a good thing, because Shane Mosley’s mouth isn’t working so good. Soft-spoken with a pleasant disposition, Mosley’s approaching 40, but doesn’t sound a day over 39.

Boxing’s rough. No one gets out unscathed. Future Hall-of-Famer Sugar Shane has been in wars—as befits a warrior—and his speed and heavy hands elevated him to the class of the class. But that was then, this is now, and the future is May 7.

Mosley’s in the twilight of his career, and what a career it’s been. But time, no less than boxing, reveals truths and consequences in foreseen ways.

During Tuesday’s telephone conference call, Mosley and his trainer Naazim Richardson spoke about Pacquiao and the upcoming fight.

At this point in Mosley’s career, speed is no longer an option. He only has power—and his decades-honed ring smarts—if he hopes to beat Pacquiao.

“This fight is very risky for Pacquiao,” said Mosley, “to fight someone with power in both hands like myself. People want to see who’s going to get knocked out in this one.”

Catching Pacquiao won’t be easy. He hits hard from ungodly angles, and he’s as confident as he is fast.

““Margarito landed the most punches ever on Manny Pacquiao,” observed Mosley.“Margarito never landed many punches on me so I know I’m fast enough to land on Manny Pacquiao.

“They said Margarito was going to kill me. People said they were scared for my health and all that crap. I had about three different things going on in my life including the divorce. But I just listened to myself and came out with the victory.”

“I felt that Pacquiao would beat Margarito by decision,” added Richardson. “Margarito has an exceptional chin. But I also felt that Shane was going to knock him out and he did. The damage he can do is limitless.”
