Shannon Briggs Hits Hamburg

Keeping up with Shannon Briggs is like keeping up with the Kardashians. It satisfies the voyeuristic. All that’s missing is the booty.

In his latest attempt to get a shot, by hook or by crook, at reigning heavyweight kingpin Wladimir Klischko, the last American to hold a heavyweight title showed up in Hamburg where Dr. Steelhammer is defending his IBF title Saturday against undefeated Kubrat Pulev.

Briggs didn’t make a scene at Klitschko’s training camp in Germany, from which he was barred. He didn’t intrude on a quiet lunch at an Italian restaurant. He wasn’t acting wild on the water. But he made his presence known by appearing at a German mall for today’s weigh-in, shirtless and wearing a mask resembling that of a Roman gladiator.

Whether Klitschko saw Briggs in the crowd isn’t known. Nor is it known whether he noticed and chose to ignore him.

Those who believe Briggs deserves a shot at the crown, based on affection and/or chauvinism, need to ask themselves what’s in it for Klitschko. I’ve asked that myself several times and have not come up with an answer.

But there’s one person out there who is willing to fight Shannon Briggs. He’s not Ukrainian. He’s not tall. He also holds no title. But he’s someone who Briggs has a better chance of beating than Klitschko.

James “Lights Out” Toney, whose own antics pale before those of Briggs, has been following Shannon the Cannon, at a safe distance, and has called him out.

“The brother whupped his ass already,” Toney told TMZ. “Imagine what the younger would do to Shannon. He’s a punk. If you want to fight somebody, come fight me. If you beat me, which you would never beat me, you can fight Klitschko. But if you want to fight me for my belt, for my world championship, hey, I’d be willing to oblige you. Come see me. Klitschko will whup your ass, another time. It’ll be an all in the family ass whuppin’. He’s a punk, bitch, pussy.”

If I were Klitschko, I’d steer clear of Briggs and Toney. It’s not that he’d lose to either one of them. There’s just no upside.

everyone please enjoy yourself making fun of our American I know their skin is brown but they are still American. Way to root for the other team. Go Patriots!

Briggs needs to saddle up his horse and ride off into the sunset before he is allowed to fight again.

Wonder where Briggs will pop up next?  Will it be sea, air, or land? Maybe Briggs can join the Marines, like fellow ex-champ, Riddick Bowe,  though he probably is a little old at this point and time. Of course the Marines can bend the rules for ex-heavyweight champs and even allow Briggs the option to “quit,” if after a brief period, Shannon decides the Corps isn’t his thing.

good point, Robert…who the hell is paying for Briggs’
travels? Toney should never get into a ring again . He’s
never been exactly a Martin Luther King when it comes
to public speaking but he is most def showing bad mental
signs in his speech..no I’m not a doctor but come on man it’s
    obvious.
What I’d like to see is Fury-Briggs. Can you imagine the press conferences? They are BOTH mental.

Shannon Briggs should prove himself first.  Fight Deontay Wilder, beat him, and then spout off. People might listen to him then. As it is now, he’s simply trying to take the easy way to the crown by pumping iron…No, he is not in boxing shape.

Man, now you know we’re close to the end times…When James Toney actually comes off as the voice of reason in any conversation, then yes it’s time to begin my post apocalyptic survival training course…Peace.

Deciphering what Toney was saying wasn’t easy. I had to listen to the interview several times and there were phrases that were jumbled beyond comprehension. Not a great advert for boxing, but a reminder of just how punishing this sport can be. Gotta figure someone is picking up the tab for Shannon’s transatlantic misadventures. Maybe a documentary filmmaker is following Shannon around, just in case he gets the million to one shot he’s hankering for.

Did TMZ provide English subtitles for the Toney interview? Leon Spinks talks like a Shakespearean actor when compared to the incoherent Toney. You have to give Briggs credit, at least he appears in shape. Maybe he just looks good and isn’t necessarily in fighting shape, but one could imagine what Toney would look like without his shirt. Toney is a true middleweight, he carries all of his weight in the middle. Is Briggs the new version of Clubber Lang and Wlad is Ivan Drago? Always wondered who would win in a bout between Clubber & Drago. Who the hell is paying for Briggs to chase Wlad around the globe? Briggs/Lang has to be spending some serious cash flying across the pond, staying in hotels, eating in restaurants, etc.
