Shannon Briggs: The Pest

Shannon Briggs: The Pest
The former champion’s delusional comeback has been more sham than anything else.

This Saturday at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida, Shannon Briggs meets inactive and unheralded Michael Marrone…

“Everybody is going to think, ‘Wow, I thought he was just this guy having fun and laughing.’ The heavyweight division is back…and I am ready to take over the heavyweight division.”—Shannon Briggs

“Klitschko is going down hard. I want the title back. I had the title twice but I was young and I was inexperienced and immature. Who would have ever thought that Shannon Briggs grew up? And I feel good. I have a little gray hair on my chin but I feel fifteen years younger than I am.”—Briggs

“All these people yelling for you in here—they don’t fight for you Shannon. You fight for you. On the fifth, in the ring, it’s just going to be me and you. None of that matters to me because on September 5th I am coming to win.”—Mike Marrone

Former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs (58-6-1) meets inactive and unheralded Floridian Michael Marrone (21-4, 15 KOs) this Saturday at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida, at the “World Heavyweight Champs, Saturday Fight Night” event—a celebration of heavyweight boxing that will be attended by luminaries past and present, including Wladimir Klitschko, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes, Michael Moorer, James “Bonecrusher” Smith, Michael Bentt, Lamon Brewster, Chris Byrd, John Ruiz, Mike Weaver, Tim Witherspoon and many other former champions.

While Marrone is above the low-level opposition that Briggs has been exploiting with suspicious body shots in a delusional comeback that has been more sham than anything else, he has only fought once since 2011. Brigg’s current number of first round KOs is 38. Marrone likely will become 39.

The obnoxious 43-year-old loudmouth Briggs may entertain the many former champs in attendance with his clown-like behavior, but he will not strengthen a bid to fight either Wlad or Deontay Wilder. Rather than earn his way up the ladder by fighting solid opposition, the fading “Cannon” has become a contagion who uses a solid physique and a pest-like approach to gain attention.

Retirement is the only place for Briggs to be.

In the later part of their careers, both Ali and Foreman extended their careers by successfully reinventing themselves. Briggs is attempting to do the same—but he doesn’t have the goods. He’s simply making a fool of himself.  In the video clip posted here with the article, the gym members are paying little attention to Briggs’s sophomoric antics. Even Briggs’s trainer seems underwhelmed.

Really starting to wonder about Wlad talking stupid saying he’s honored to be in the company of all the former champs, knowing full well that Briggs is gonna’ pull some shit on the evening…..like he’s feeding into this shit. That mess with him on the board all alone and way the hell out on the bay was obviously a setup. Though at first I thought otherwise, I’m now unconvinced Wlad was not a willing participant….way too convenient if you ask me.
