WBA/IBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov (12-1, 8 KOs) successfully defended his titles against Danny “The Bronx Bomber” Santiago (31-5-1, 19 KOs) with a ninth round TKO Friday night at South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Shumenov, from Las Vegas via Kazakhstan, systematically broke-down the game but outclassed Santiago with his jab and body shots in the early rounds. In round nine Shumenov unloaded a 23-punch barrage, forcing referee Tony Weeks to step in and call a halt to the action at 0:46.

“I didn’t count the punches,” Shumenov said after the fight, “but I could have thrown more. It definitely wasn’t like I expected. He specifically prepared for my style. I knew he was tough but not that tough. He’s durable and can take good punches.”

“Shumenov is a great fighter,” said Santiago. “He has a good, sound technique. My eye swelled and got worse and I had trouble seeing the punches at the end. I thought I could have gone longer but, you live by the sword, you die by the sword.”

Former world light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal watched the fight from ringside. “He said he wanted to fight me in Canada,” stated Shumenov. “I said he was from Canada, I’m from Kazakhstan, so let’s fight in Las Vegas where all champions dream of fighting. Pascal, Cloud, Dawson…I’m ready for anybody!”

  1. Jose Rodriguez 08:31pm, 07/30/2011

In March, 1973 at the Felt Forum, NY; Rodrigo Valdez fought Jose Rodriguez winning the fight by TKO on 5th round.  I’m looking for any pictures and/or coverage of that fight.  If possible, can you provided any assistance.  Keep the great job you are doing and thanks in advance.
