It was not the “greatest fight in Mexican history,” as foretold by Canelo’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. It was one of the worst…

Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a fight televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs), the redhead from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, won a unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-3-1, 32 KOs), the hapless son of a legend from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, after 12 lopsided rounds.

All three judges scored the fight 120-108. Chavez didn’t win a round. He didn’t win a minute of any round. What he did win was grudging respect for taking a beating for a profitable night of work.

It was not, needless to say, the “greatest fight in Mexican history,” as foretold by Canelo’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. It was one of the worst.

Fighting out of the red corner in blue trunks with gold trim, Canelo had his way with his opponent from the opening bell. He raked his foe with jabs, hooks, straight rights and uppercuts, but failed to get his moribund challenger out of there.

Junior deserves credit for enduring the barrage. But the buck stops there.

Chavez, fighting out of the blue corner in white trunks trimmed in red, needs to retire before he gets seriously hurt. His entry into boxing always felt less like a career than an oedipal exercise, as if had something to prove to his dad, and that was never more true than in the folly against Canelo.

He has no defense. He doesn’t move his head. He has no footwork. He is slow and telegraphs his punches.

Chavez is a limited fighter with limited gifts, if not limited means, and he, like many fight fans who have yet to learn otherwise, has been exploited, and perhaps lied to, so that others might benefit.

The upside of Saturday’s main event is that Canelo is going to fight Gennady Golovkin in September. Triple G was present during the match, even though we were told he would not be in attendance, and the hoopla surrounding the announcement will only grow over time. But coming as it did after after a mismatch of monumental proportions somewhat tainted the news.

At least Canelo vs. Golovkin will be competitive. The superlatives are already flying fast and furious. But at this early date they are premature and ineffective, especially while the aftertaste of the glorified infomercial co-starring Chavez Jr. still lingers.

I think this fight was rigged.
like the French Election.  Completely totally set up to make the GGG vs Canelo fight happen in Sept.

GGG better go to the body.
Yea i love how Canelo looks great!  Who wouldn’t look great against a fighter
    that does not fight back.
Look forward to watching Canelo’s Head snap back from GGG’s Jabs in

Koolz…Tanks for the link, brother. I will try to watch some of the “fight,” but if it is as bad as they say, I’ll probably skim through it.  Just got through watching an old fight from 1985, a cruiserweight title bout featuring Dwight Qawi vs. Piet Crous. I have been looking for this fight for a long time. Probably give the Canelo/Chavez Jr. bout a peek sometime tommorrow.

@Koolz-Jimmy Paypa/Shavkat Rakhimov….Paypa having a good old time walking through punches and swinging for the rafters…..found out the hard way that a hard head doesn’t help much for a well placed liver shot!

    That was so bad…that…

At least we know the September fight will happen between Canelo and GGG.

Want to see Lemieux fight Jacobs.

Remember seeing Danny “Little Red” Lopez with the Indian headdress for the first time back in the day. Didn’t know his ancestry at the time, I wondered how in the hell that guy was an Injun. Figured the guy must have been one of those Lumbee Indians. The life of Danny or Ernie might make a decent boxing flic or book. Someone should do a book or movie on Saad Muhammad as well.

Canelo has a better chin than Jacobs…..maybe…..and that’s it!

Maybe some members of St. Patrick’s brigade on a little R&R?

Studies have shown that 10% of the population of Ireland are redheads and 10% of Jewish men have red beards. Emigration from Europe has multiplied the population of redheads in the Americas…..must have been a redhead in that woodpile all those years ago in Canelos family history….take your pick! Nacho Beristain says he’s not Jewish and he’s sticking to his story just like all of his Converso ancestors did during the Inquisition!

Loved it when Canelo went to the ropes for the express purpose of baiting Junior….and Lampley hyped that “Chavez is landing some shots now”, when in fact he wasn’t landing shit! The punch stats were totally wack…..Junior landed one good jab and one right on the night and Canelo let him land those!

Julio Cesar Chavez needs to get a refund on that nose job! He had a perfectly good nose but I guess he wanted to look cute like Froch. They think they’re doing it for the ladies….really?!.... let’s get real here…. in that case….it’s far more cost effective to get your dick enhanced than your nose!

“At least one Irishman won. Irish War Cry finished in the middle of the pack.”

I guess that ending in the middle of the pack does in fact = an Irish victory—
In fact, that may be the very definition of an Irish victory.

Lemieux got screwed here too but at least he got paid! You can bet your ass he thought he was next up when he decided to come back eight weeks after his fight with Stevens. Then he’s put in with a friggin’ fanatic who is willing to swim in his own blood and does everything short of kicking and biting him because he’s a Mexican warrior you see and David’s a friggin’ gringo! I liked Roy Jones’ tidbit about guys that won’t fight anyone outside of their house but they’ll fight like hell with their own brothers inside the house…..that sure as fuk wasn’t Junior last night!

“as there even been a more successful advertising campaign/con job—”

    Jr. and Manny?

  20. Lucas McCain 06:12am, 05/07/2017

On the topic of hyperbole—has there even been a more successful advertising campaign/con job (excluding national politics, that is); get the public to pay millions of dollars to watch an advertisement for the Next Big Thing, one signed and sealed in advance.  Credit cards at the ready?

  21. Alt Knight 04:57am, 05/07/2017

So much for my gamble that Junior would pull off an upset. Haven’t seen the fight, but from what I have read, it was a stinker. At least one Irishman won. Irish War Cry finished in the middle of the pack.

As a transplanted American boxing fan, I had little doubt Canelo would win this fight, but really did not know it would be the beatdown it turned out to be. Chavez Jr. has been a lazy, arrogant embarrassment to his father’s name and legacy and really has had no business being in a boxing ring. I hope he retires so we don’t have to see him failing to show up for training and not making weight again.

Before this fight we were led to believe that he was taking training seriously and that coupled with Nacho Berenstein, he might make a fight of it. I’m glad I was not in the US and forced to shell out $50 to see this shit of a fight. I enjoyed the Lemieux fight as I knew I would and hope he eventually gets a shot at the GGG/Canelo fight even though he has already lost to GGG.
