“Can you dig it?”—Super Fly

Super flyweight (or junior bantamweight) McJoe Arroyo, a 28-year-old Puerto Rican southpaw, will face Eliecer Aquino of the Dominican Republic for a scheduled 12 rounds at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, on April 28.

A four-year pro, Arroyo (13-0, 7 KOs) hasn’t been in the ring since April of last year, when he beat Jairo Hernandez by unanimous decision. Rusty as a kid’s bike left out in the rain, Arroyo will have to milk his favorite-son status for all it’s worth. Not that seven-year pro Aquino (16-0-1, 10 KOs) will ever be confused with Omar Narvaez, but at least he fought four times to Arroyo’s twice in 2013, and had a bout as recently as last month, retiring Geyci Lorenzo in the fourth.

I was thinking of plunking down a simoleon or two on Aquino, but my Vegas Rothstein refused to take the bet. Can’t say I blame him, given the gambler’s code of never taking a bet on a boxer whose age, stance, height, or reach BoxRec couldn’t give damn one about.

Hmm. Why not take a trip over there to watch and then you can continue to Panama and have lunch with Duran after which you can stop in St Maarten and attend Smoger’s referee clinic,?

Why, thank you, Ted.  Perhaps not every comment, but I do try to get to most of them.  To each his own, but I’m not a believer in the “I Have Spoken” approach (except in my personal life).  And, yes, I see it as a matter of courtesy.

Apropos of absolutely nothing, I’m watching “Highly Questionable” on ESPN 2.  I have no idea what they’re talking about, as they’re always going on about sports of which I have little or no knowledge, but I love Gonzalo “Papi” Le Batard.

One of the things I like about CG threads is that he has the courtesy of responding to each comment.

McIrish and McTed:  Yes, unusual name selections on the part of Mrs. Arroyo.  Surprised (and relieved) she didn’t go with McRib.  Anyway, McJoe and McWilliams are indeed twins, the latter a flyweight who hasn’t fought since early 2013.
