  • 10 Greatest Upsets in Heavyweight History – April 10th, 2012

There's nothing like an upset to make one believe. All the questionable decisions that cast doubt on the sport are rendered meaningless when an upset occurs. And when the upset is during a contest between world-class heavyweights, the satisfaction is that much greater. This sampling covers some of the greatest upsets among heavyweights in history and includes Foreman-Frazier, Norton-Ali, Rahman-Lewis, Ali-Foreman, Louis-Schmeling, Clay-Liston, Braddock-Baer, and Tyson-Douglas...

  • Lennox Lewis vs. Hasim Rahman II – November 24th, 2011

We often appreciate fighters more after they're gone than when they were active. Such is the case with Lennox Lewis. He was derided as being methodical and robotic, as dull as dishwater, especially when compared to the roller-coaster reign of Mike Tyson. But when Lennox had to step it up, he stepped it up, and there's no better example than his Nov. 7, 2001 rematch with Hasim Rahman at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Lennox the Lion relinquished his crown to The Rock seven months earlier and was determined to avenge that defeat. And, man, did he ever...

  • Boxing In and Out of the Ring – December 22nd, 2011

The documentary Boxing In and Out of the Ring examines some of shadier aspects of our beloved sport—namely the games promoters play with fight managers and sanctioning bodies to get their fighters the rankings and big money fights they desire. Using interviews, fight footage, and hidden FBI surveillance cameras, the picture painted isn't a pretty one, but it's something that has been going on long before most of us were even born...

  • Vitali Klitschko vs. Lennox Lewis – January 8th, 2012

It feels as if they were heavyweight from opposing eras, and in a sense they were. Lennox Lewis was the long reigning heavyweight champion, having first won the WBC heavyweight title from Tony Tucker on May 5, 1993 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Aside from two losses, both avenged, to Oliver “Cry Me a River” McCall on Sept. 24, 1994 and Hasim Rahman on April 21, 2001, Lewis was a proud champion who dominated the division against sometimes less than sterling opposition. When he met Vitali Klitschko on June 21, 2003, Lennox’s record was 40-2-1. Vitali was 32-1. The Ukrainian was already recognized as a force to be reckoned with, but how much of a force and the degree of reckoning became clear as the fight progressed…

  • Lennox Lewis vs. Frank Bruno – January 26th, 2012

The Battle of Britain was fought on Oct. 1, 1993, at Cardiff Arms Park in Cardiff, Wales. Lennox Lewis was 23-0 going in and had won the WBC heavyweight title from Tony Tucker just five months earlier. Frank Bruno was 36-3 at the time. His only losses were to Bonecrusher Smith in 1984, Tim Witherspoon in 1986, and Mike Tyson in 1989. Bruno was big, strong and resilient, but with a somewhat questionable chin, and the pre-dread Lennox put that chin to the test...

  • When Harry Met Ali (Documentary) – March 9th, 2012

There are no shortage of documentaries on Muhammad Ali. Some are good, some are not so good, and some are better than most. The documentary "When Harry Met Ali" is better than most and is narrated by British boxing writer Harry Carpenter, who followed Ali from his earliest days to the end of his remarkable career. This film is beautifully done, a comprehensive montage featuring terrific fight footage and interviews, with commentary by some of The Greatest's opponents and pugilistic heirs...
