The Black Mamba Cometh

The Black Mamba Cometh
It’s a good nickname, a great nickname, and seemed to embody Mayweather’s essence.

Those who watched the fights in the 1980s and ‘90s remember a light welterweight from Grand Rapids, Michigan named Roger Mayweather, aka the Black Mamba.

It’s a good nickname, perhaps even a great nickname, and seemed to embody Mayweather’s essence, as the Black Mamba is a venomous snake endemic to sub-Saharan Africa.

A lot has happened since then. Roger Mayweather the fighter became Roger Mayweather the trainer and his prized pupil is his nephew Floyd Mayweather.

It may seem strange to refer to an aging trainer with health problems as the Black Mamba, but don’t tell that to Roger.

Yesterday TMZ Sports reported that Roger Mayweather, to prevent Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant from using his nickname, has filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in an attempt to gain exclusive rights to the words Black Mamba.

Mayweather’s embrace of the Black Mamba ring moniker came about in an unlikely fashion. According to TMZ Sports, Roger was watching a TV show about reptiles and saw a film clip of a Black Mamba.

He could relate.

Johnny-come-lately Kobe Bryant first called himself Black Mamba in 2009. Bryant claimed that Black Mamba is his alter ego, which seems unlikely since it was Roger Mayweather’s alter ego first.

Bryant failed to submit paperwork on the use of Black Mamba, but several other entities did, including a condom manufacturer, a soft drink concoctor, a cigar maker, and, last but not least, and dreamer-upper of male enhancement products.

No exclusivity, however, was granted. So Roger Mayweather, by law, is likely to be the Black Mamba in perpetuity—and good for him.

He earned it the hard way.

did you guys see the difference in size between Whitaker and Mayweather….....this is why fighters should do same day weigh ins…...If you cannot fight competively at a certain weight…then move on…...

Weigh ins ..that take place several days ahead mean nothing at all…...see Jeff Fenech…..and like that…

You fight where you are the most dangerous…or you don’t fight…

In amateurs…many fourteen yr olds brutalized twelve year olds…due to the age bracket and weight parameters…

Mr Ecksel….I have always read your articles….

Keep ‘em coming….........‘cept anything that assumes Leonard beat Hagler

who was that old and ageing trainer…with health problems…...took to carrying a folding razor blade after his pro career was over…????  THe guy that took Joe Louis to the best of all time…who was that guy…????

In those days ..times were hard and things were bad….and Pro Boxing was better than waiting in the soup lines…

Chappy was never a role model…but he sure knew how to teach THE BROWN BOMBER TO BREAK THE COLOUR LINE AND BECOME THE HW CHAMPION OF THE WORLD…..almost twelve years

...seeing that Roger…the original mayweather….fought a lot of the top guys in his day…...A LOT…OF THE TOP GUYS….and did well…..while he was in shape

I can see why he’s advised his family…pbf…..MAKE A NAME…and dance…..aka Original Sugar Ray RObinson…and come back and make a forturn by working your way t o the Title…..The original Roger Mayweather….took a lot of blows..from the best in the field…...

If i had love for my blood…..I’d advise them to avoid this path in Pro career..and like I said earlier in several posts…....Gangsters got chased out of boxing in the fifties and sixties…..and have been replaced by the fair and loving compassionate era of the promoters

Hey fight fans ??!!!!......North America or Europe…..

...any of you guys had to put up with company for more than three days ?????...be it ‘Wife’s ’ relatives….or ..an old time buddy from Viet Nam….or a lost soul from Afghanistan..or Iraq..and like that….........or he/she just need a place to stay ..

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE…especially if you fuk her…..

Excellent Boxing skills and gym work were passed on to pbf….but so were the life and domestic skills….

    ...all of these lads have been in jail for beating upon women…..........guess it keeps their fist to face skills sharp;

  6. bikermike 04:05pm, 03/06/2014

....and…Roger TOOK HIS WINNINGS..AND BLEW THEM…....and towards the end…fought for chump change

...just another story about a gifted athlete….who could not handle success

Today’s pbf…..had a leg up on his career….due to the MAYWEATHER name…before he even got started…....those Mayweather lads made a lot of noise .......in their day

Nice article, I always enjoyed watching Roger fight, nice skills and a great punch, with a little vulnerability mixed in… seldom in a dull fight.

I seem to recall Pernell Whitaker wishing to ascertain for himself exactly why The Black Mamba was monikered thus by attempting to yank his trunks down during their clash. Roger cleared up any misunderstanding by dropping Sweet Pea…

  9. bikermike 04:39pm, 03/05/2014

btw…NASA studies have published that a whale fart in a contained area would be about twelve hundred pounds per square inch….....and the whale was pretty pissed off to be contained anyway,,,,,,,,,,data gathered by ‘environmentalists’ who insisted on releasing the ‘killer whale’

They released the whale….and the whale ate all the seals in the area

You take off the protections..and fighters will come to the top….make ‘m fight every sixty days…...and CHAMPIONS DEFEND TWICE A YEAR.

Roger Mayweather had a small window of ‘SUPREME FIGHTER ’ status….because he was..

Truly a gifted master of the art of BOXING….BUT

He handled money like any kid who knew nothing…had nobody to trust….and his winnings went ..like a fart in a wind tunnel
Roger stopped doing the things that made him a top notch FIGHTER…...and blew his career by trying to be a big player outside the ring…so sad

  11. bikermike 04:15pm, 03/05/2014

Roger Mayweather was a thoroughly dangerous man ...in his time

If nobody knows…the BLACK MAMBA IS THE MOST DANGEROUS POISONOUS SNAKE ON EARTH….ONE STRIKE..YOU’RE DEAD

He earned that moniker…despite the china chin

  12. bikermike 04:11pm, 03/05/2014

The fighter…Roger Mayweather…...THE MEXICAN ASSASSIN…....I’d dial a guy like him…for fifty bucks…..any time…cuz he went up against the best of the time…or those who would grant him a fight….

Real pros…just waited for Roger to self destruct…rather than mix with him when he was at his peak..(small window, once he had money)....and he did

  13. bikermike 04:05pm, 03/05/2014

...and ...like Ted pointed out….....there was a lot of Mexican…or Mexican Americans in that Weight Division ...at the time

Not the first time the ‘RACE CARD’ was used..

  14. bikermike 04:02pm, 03/05/2014

    Hey Ted…right again ...as ever

The original Roger Mayweather was a FORCE…in his time….exciting guy…..could hit ..both hands ...like a whale fart in a contained area…..but had a chin that would fail….like a bubble in the park

Because of this…Roger Mayweather knew the value of footwork…angles ..and accurate punching….and he did well…............and blew any and all of his winnings

  15. Ted 12:49pm, 03/05/2014

He was also called The Mexican Assassin.
