Wepner is meeting with ESPN executives to promote a series of documentaries (Ecksel)

Former heavyweight contender Chuck Wepner, aka the Bayonne Bleeder, can usually be found in New Jersey—but not this week.

Wepner is in Hollywood meeting with ESPN executives to promote a series of documentaries that will air this fall, one of which is called “The Real Rocky.”

“The Real Rocky” solidifies the fact, after years of litigation, that Wepner was the real-life inspiration for the Rocky movies that made Sylvester Stallone a famous movie star and zillionaire.

Wepner was asked about the documentary’s title, whether “The Real Rocky” was hyperbole, whether “The Real Rocky” was maybe stretching things a bit.

“You must be living underneath a rock, sir,” replied Wepner, “to not know I’m the inspiration for Rocky.”

Keeping with the Rocky theme, another reporter asked Wepner if he, like Rocky Balboa, ever fought a Russian.

“Yeah, as a fighter,” said Wepner, “and a bouncer.”
