The Thrilla Not in Manila

The Thrilla Not in Manila
There has been talk of Manny Pacquiao fighting Brandon Rios, but that seems very unlikely.

Manny’s next fight will likely be in Asia, not in the U.S. That makes sense. Number one, that’s where the money is. Number two, that’s where the money is…

While Manny Pacquiao was in Israel retracing Jesus’ footsteps, those with an interest in his future, who worship at a different altar, have been plotting his return.

The machinery is in motion for Pac Man to return to the ring in April. That bout will be a tune-up of sorts before Manny fights Juan Manuel Marquez a fifth time.

“We’re fighting in April,” Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz told the Manila Bulletin, “and we already have an opponent in mind.”

There are actually several possible candidates that Manny might face. Topping the list is former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko, hot off his recent stoppage of Ricky Hatton. Another possibility is Jesse Vargas. Timothy Bradley is on the list, as is Miguel Cotto and Lamont Peterson. There has even been talk of Pacquiao fighting Brandon Rios, but that match, however attractive, seems unlikely given the givens.

What is likely is that Manny’s next fight will be in Asia, not in the U.S. That makes sense. Number one, that’s where the money is. Number two, that’s where the money is. Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin Gacal, said that the bout will be in Asia “for tax purposes.” The countries being considered are Singapore, Macau, and Abu Dhabi. Pacquiao’s home country was briefly considered, but the Thrilla will not be in Manila.
