The Two Mr. Wilsons

The Two Mr. Wilsons
Sorry, but another Wilson, Flip, has pretty much got dibs on "The devil made me do it."

There seems to be no end of confusion regarding the fate of former heavyweight Darroll Wilson (27-10-2, 21 KOs), who fought from 1993 to 2006…

These two deaf guys meet, one of them carrying a fishing rod.
“Going fishing?”
“No, I’m going fishing.”
“Oh, I thought you were going fishing.”

There seems to be no end of confusion regarding the fate of former heavyweight Darroll Wilson (27-10-2, 21 KOs), who fought from 1993 to 2006 and is probably best remembered for his amazing comeback win against Courage Tshabalala in 1997. Down in the first and third, Wilson stopped Tshabalala by knockout in the fourth.

Is “Doin’ Damage” doin’ time?

Are people confusing Shannon Briggs, whom Darroll Wilson stopped by third-round TKO in 1996, with Shannon Mitchell, a Georgia policeman whose life was threatened by Darryl Wilson in 2000? Apparently, because the Internet is awash with the rumor that the former boxer was sentenced to 15 years in prison for aggravated assault on a police officer.

Darryl Wilson, pulled over for running a red light, beat Deputy Mitchell for several minutes, until backup arrived, despite being pepper sprayed and gut shot. Darryl Wilson, the much larger and more powerful of the two, wrested the deputy’s .40-caliber Glock and fired at him. “If not for the gun jamming, the state believes Deputy Mitchell would have been killed,” said an assistant district attorney. The deputy suffered severe head injuries as a result of the attack.

According to a pastor who knew and befriended the assailant, Darryl Wilson was a “God-fearing man” (but evidently not a policeman-fearing one), adding, “That’s not him.”

No? It wasn’t Darryl Wilson? Well, it wasn’t Darroll Wilson.

The judge sentenced Darryl Wilson to 10 years in prison, in a facility that provides psychiatric care, to be followed by a 17-year probationary sentence, during which time his mental health is to be monitored.

The devil, according to Darryl Wilson, “tried to kill me and Shannon Mitchell.” Sorry, Darryl, but another Wilson, Flip, has pretty much got dibs on “The devil made me do it.”

As for Darroll Wilson, he went on to fight, and lose to, Tim Witherspoon, Ray Mercer, and Oliver McCall, finally hanging up the leather following his loss to Sedreck Fields in 2006. Impressive? No. But the point is that he didn’t beat up a cop and he’s not an unwilling guest of the Peach State.

Get it? Got it. Good.

That’s probably the first and last time Lily Tomlin had her hands on a man. I’m just saying.
