Valuev Praises Lebedev

After Denis Lebedev’s 10th round demolition of former great Roy Jones Jr. at the Sport Complex Krylatskoe in Moscow, Russia, Saturday night, former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev wrote on his blog:

“[Jones] did well in the initial rounds, but after the sixth it was noticeable that he was tired. In the second half of the fight, Jones was breathing heavily and exploded only in short spurts. I believe that Jones won round two or three. In this fight, there is no doubt that Lebedev had the physical advantage. He also displayed a heavier punch. Early in the 10th round, I had a feeling that he wanted to finish the fight by knockout. It just happened. Congratulations to Lebedev on the victory. A new star has risen on the horizon of Russian boxing.”

Lebedev may be young and hungry and a fighter on the rise, but he was matched with someone way past his prime, a fighter who’s a shadow of his former self. The Russian needs to fight and beat a top-10 cruiserweight before the plaudits start falling like rain.

Valuev is a decent chap who wants to praise his fellow countryman. But if beating Roy Jones makes Lebedev “a new star…on the horizon of Russian boxing,” we say slow down big guy, not so fast, not quite nyet.
